Shoupe's fist slammed against the door again, sharp and unrelenting — a brutal reminder that they were all spiraling into something they couldn't fix. The hollow thuds echoed through the house, syncing with Avery's heartbeat, which pulsed violently in her ears. Her chest felt tight, like it couldn't contain the panic building inside.
"JJ!" Shoupe's voice roared from the other side, specific and demanding.
Avery's hand clenched at her side, and her heart threatened to burst from her chest. Every word from that man sent a ripple of dread through her.
"What do you want to do?" JJ asked John B, his voice low but urgent. His blue eyes locked onto John B's, searching for something — reassurance, maybe, or just direction. Avery noticed the way his hands gripped John B's shoulders, steady but tense.
Seconds slipped away like grains of sand. The doorknob rattled — a warning. Shoupe was getting impatient. The sound jolted John B back to reality.
"Hide the body."
The words punched the air out of Avery's lungs. Her stomach dropped, and an icy wave of panic coursed through her veins. This wasn't just bad — it was catastrophic.
"Hide the body where?" Pope whispered, voice tight with fear.
"Shut up. That's what we're doing, okay?" JJ snapped, eyes flicking away from Avery's pale, stricken face.
"Hey, behind the couch. JJ, move the couch," John B ordered, stepping into command mode. JJ didn't hesitate. He was the only one who didn't seem completely frozen by fear.
"Behind the couch?!" Pope's disbelief cracked through the tension, his hands flying to his face.
"We're hiding the body — we don't have time!" Avery cut in, her voice quivering even as she tried to sound decisive. The boys started dragging the couch, their movements clumsy and frantic.
JJ spun around. "Guys, keep it down."
It was chaos. Controlled chaos, but chaos nonetheless. The air was thick with panic and the coppery tang of blood. They whispered commands, stumbled over each other, and tried to make impossible decisions with shaking hands. The weight of it — all 6'4" and almost 300 pounds — made everything harder, more surreal.
"Oh my God, guys. Don't drag him!" Avery cried, stepping forward as they began pulling the body. "You're gonna smear blood across the entire house!"
She grabbed a skateboard nearby — something that belonged to JJ, worn and scratched. "Here. Use this. Roll him. Just... don't let it spread."
Kiara knelt beside Cleo, who sat motionless. Her eyes were vacant, staring through the floor like she wasn't really there. She hadn't said a word.
Sarah and Avery scrubbed at the floor, adrenaline numbing their hands as they wiped and wiped, but the blood clung to every surface. JJ, jaw clenched, made his way toward the door to stall Shoupe.
