Everyone you know will die.
It was a fact—stone cold and unmoving—that Avery hated with every fiber of her being. It was the kind of truth that clawed its way into her chest during sleepless nights, a cruel whisper that love could never silence.
When she loved, she gave everything. There was no middle ground, no reserve. She had never truly lost someone—not someone who hadn't at least been given the mercy of time.
She had been lucky in that sense—until now.
JJ was her heart. Her constant. Her wild, reckless, beautiful constant. The idea of losing him carved out a hollow in her soul so vast, it made her feel like she was disappearing with him. And despite how many times he'd danced with danger, despite all the close calls that came with being JJ, this time was different. This time felt real. Final.
The ache in her chest was suffocating, like her lungs had been crushed under the weight of her grief. She couldn't breathe. Couldn't move. Couldn't even cry without shaking.
Maybe—maybe this was the better way to go. Maybe it was easier this way, to crumble with him, to skip the torment of grief.
Because grieving JJ felt impossible.
The heavy stone door that JJ had pulled closed behind him earlier suddenly slammed open, sunlight slashing through the dusty air as their friends came rushing in, their silhouettes sharp against the swirling remnants of the sandstorm.
Avery was curled over JJ's body, her hands clutching his shirt like they could keep him tethered to this world. Her cries were raw, breaking in her throat like something unfixable.
Pope dropped to his knees beside her, panic etched into every muscle in his face. His eyes darted frantically, scanning JJ, scanning her, scanning everything.
"What happened?" he asked, his voice cracking mid-word.
Avery couldn't even lift her head. "Groff," she choked out, the name laced with venom and grief. Her voice barely made it past her sobs. "He—he stabbed him."
John B collapsed beside them next, his hands instantly finding JJ's face, cupping it like it might fall apart without his touch. His breath hitched.
No one spoke. They didn't have to.
Tears began falling silently down John B's cheeks. The horrible, sinking realization settled into all of them at once: JJ might be gone. Their brother. Their reckless, loyal, maddeningly brave friend—eternal in their minds—wasn't moving.
John B's hands fumbled down to JJ's wrist, pressing, searching. Avery hadn't even thought to check. The world had stopped turning long before that.
"Wait—there's a pulse," he said, eyes wide.
Avery's head snapped toward him, dizzy with disbelief. "What?"
"He has a pulse," John B repeated slowly, making each word loud enough to slice through the noise inside her skull. "He's alive. We can get him help."
