JJ gripped the steering wheel of the Twinkie a little too tight, his jaw clenched, phone pressed to his ear as he drove aimlessly through town—every second wasted felt like another mile between him and Avery. His knuckles were white, a muttered string of curses slipping from his lips as the call went to voicemail again.

"Goddamn it. Goddamn it." He tapped to redial, brows furrowed in frustration, desperation starting to claw up his spine. "Pick up. Come on, man, pick up."

"Yo. JJ?" John B's familiar voice cut through the tension like a match to gasoline.

"Little change of plans. They did it. They sent Kie and Avery to the wilderness camp."

"Oh, no."

JJ's grip on the wheel tightened, his knee bouncing wildly. "So, uh, I'm gonna need about eight hours for liberation."

"Eight hours? I don't have eight hours! We've got a jet here. We're all waiting."

"I know, dog. I know the clock is ticking. Just hold out as long as you can. If you gotta go, we'll meet you there."

"No, we can't... we can't... No, JJ, listen, we can't wait for you."

"I know," JJ snapped back, his voice rising under the pressure. Every nerve in his body buzzed with urgency. He couldn't stand the thought of Avery locked away—alone, scared, maybe thinking he'd given up on her. "I'm working on it, dude. Luckily, I'm a problem solver. Just stay in the Matrix, okay? I repeat-"

Boom.

The sound of the tire blowing out cut him off, the van lurching hard to the side. JJ fought the wheel as the Twinkie skidded before coming to a jolting halt on the shoulder.

"Damn!" He threw the phone down, the call ending with a beep. "You gotta be kidding me! Piece of shit."

Slamming the door open, he kicked the rusted panel in frustration before grabbing the spare tire from the back.

He was halfway through dragging it out when the low hum of a fast-approaching engine caught his attention.

He froze.

The sound got louder—too fast for comfort. Slowly, unease curled up his spine like ice water. JJ turned, and his heart nearly stopped.

The car coming down the road was too familiar.

No. No, no, no.

The vehicle slowed, then stopped. The engine cut off with a threatening quiet. The doors opened, the silence between slams saying more than any words could. JJ's shoulders squared instinctively, his swagger returning on autopilot—but the confidence didn't reach his eyes.

"Okay, fine," he muttered, under his breath, trying to summon any last-second miracle that could get him out of this.

Then he heard it.
