"Welcome, welcome to this year's Kildare Enduro. What a fantastic day we got for racing today. You guys ready to burn some gas?"
The announcer's voice echoed over the beach, bouncing off the tension like a match hovering over gasoline.
The Pogues stood in a tight cluster near the track, their figures framed against the roar of engines and the salt-sticky breeze. JJ's dirt bike gleamed under the overcast light, ready and waiting. Avery's arms were crossed, her expression unreadable as she watched the lineup forming. She didn't like these races—never had. Too many spills, too many broken bones.
And this year, Rafe and Topper were racing too. Like adding kerosene to JJ's already raging fire.
But Sarah and Kiara had made it their mission to keep her distracted, shoving a Solo cup of beer into her hand and dragging her into the chaos. It worked—sort of. She cheered. She smiled. But her eyes kept finding JJ.
John B had noticed too. He reached out and nudged Avery's elbow. "Come on," he said with a grin. "Let's give him some motivation."
They approached him from behind. Avery slipped her hands around his ribs and squeezed gently, pressing her cheek against his back for a second before stepping to his side.
"Let's go, baby," she said lightly, masking her nerves with a playful tone.
"How we feeling, champ?"
JJ turned to face her. The smile on his face was confident, but his eyes gave him away. There was something under the surface. A flicker of tension that hadn't been there earlier.
"Like I got this whole shot," he said, cocky as ever. "I'm gonna win it this year. I know I am." He glanced between Avery and John B, smirking. "If I want to impress the girl, I gotta."
She rolled her eyes, but John B clapped him on the back. "Yeah, you're gonna win."
JJ turned to Cleo, who had been working on adjusting the tire pressure, "Cleo, how we doing, girl?"
Cleo straightened up after adjusting the tire pressure. "Everything's all good, man," she said. "The girl's ready."
"Appreciate you, Cleo," JJ said, slapping her hand in their usual handshake.
"Hey, bring it home, little boy," she added.
"You know I will."
John B pressed his hands on either sides of JJ's face, "You got this shit."
Avery smiled at him, "Good luck, pretty boy." She stood on her toes, pressing her lips to JJ's cheek.
He smiled at her, but she didn't miss the way his smile faltered once they turned away.
"Hey, John B," JJ called suddenly. "Hold up. One sec."
John B stopped, eyebrows knitting together. Avery slowed her steps but didn't look back. Whatever JJ needed to say, it wasn't for her. Not yet.
