Avery could swear she was having the best sleep of her life

Avery could swear she was having the best sleep of her life. The chamber's temperature was perfect, like a gentle embrace that soothed the tension in her muscles. The pillow beneath her head was surprisingly soft, more luxurious than anything she'd slept on in months. The soundproof walls kept everything distant—quiet, like a world sealed away just for them. The air smelled faintly sterile, but that was a small price to pay for the deep, uninterrupted rest she hadn't realized she desperately needed. It was the most peaceful sleep she'd had in a long time—considering everything they'd just been through.

And yet, as much as she relished the stillness, Avery knew she'd never admit it to anyone. After everything, especially the danger they'd narrowly escaped, this felt like the best twelve hours of her life. But if she told JJ that, his ego would need its own room to fit in the door. She'd never hear the end of it.

But for now, she could pretend this was just a moment for her. No explosions. No threats. No adrenaline surges. Just... peace.

That was until she heard JJ's voice—strained, urgent—cutting through the stillness.

"Ave." His voice barely reached her ears at first, muffled by the heavy haze of sleep.

"Ave, princess, wake up. Hey, look at me." His voice cracked slightly, and that did it—Avery shot up, blinking rapidly as her vision adjusted. Her heart pounded as sleep clung to her mind, but her body was already reacting to the tension in his voice.

"What?" She mumbled, trying to clear the fog from her mind, her eyes still blurry with the remnants of sleep.

JJ was sitting up now, leaning toward her with wide eyes that didn't hide the anxiety clawing at him. "There was a guy in the hall just now. I think it was the guy. The dude from the wreck. 'Cause he had a wound—right where I got him with the spear gun."

Avery's pulse spiked. Panic knotted in her stomach, and a cold sweat prickled down her back. The soothing warmth of the chamber now felt more like a trap—like the walls were closing in around her.

"Did he see you?" Her voice was quieter now, barely a whisper as she glanced between JJ's troubled blue eyes and the window, hoping, praying she wouldn't see someone lurking in the hall.

"Yeah," JJ breathed, the weight of the words settling between them.

"So, he knows we're here." Avery's voice dropped, barely a whisper. The cold realization of the danger they were in started to unfurl in her chest.

JJ didn't reply right away. Instead, he shot a glance toward the small window. "We've gotta get out."

Avery's throat tightened as her breathing quickened, her chest constricting. The window in front of them felt like a symbol of their captivity—a thin pane of glass separating them from safety. It wasn't just the physical barrier that had her heart racing, but the soundproof walls that made everything feel too enclosed, too suffocating. They were stuck in here. The air felt too thick to breathe.
