The sun was high and relentless, beating down on the overgrown property as the Pogues stood at the water's edge. It was humid enough to make their shirts stick to their backs, and the salty breeze off the marsh didn't do much but carry the scent of old wood and sun-baked mud. Still, no one complained. Not really. Not when this was their first big step toward building something of their own.

Since JJ had spent all their money on buying the land back from the bank, they had no choice but to do everything from scratch. And somehow, despite everything, no one held it against him. Not even Pope—who, if anyone, had the biggest right to.

Avery didn't like JJ's move. She didn't agree with it. But she understood.

It was his home, even if it was haunted with awful memories. He wanted it back. He wanted to paint over the scars. Build something that wasn't made of splinters and yelling and silence. And Avery—she got that.

They all did.

Which is how she found herself standing beside him now, watching him try to talk over the whir of machinery as they approached a stocky man with grease-stained hands and noise-canceling headphones half-off his ears.

"Listen, Buffy, we just need your help for the pilings on the dock," JJ called out, waving his arms a little too wide like that might help. "It'll only take half a day!"

Buffy looked up from whatever chaos he was overseeing with a wrench and a grimace, tugging his headphones off like JJ had just insulted his mother. "No, no, no. That's, like, two days of work. You know how many clients I got up my ass? Now you want me to drop everything?"

JJ turned toward Avery with the look. The silent one. The "bail me out with your smile" look.

She narrowed her eyes, biting back a grin, then turned to Buffy. "Come on, Buffy. Just a little help, that's it. Please?"

She gave him her best sweet smile, the one that had helped get them out of more than a few jams. For a second, she actually thought it might work. Buffy's eye twitched. His jaw shifted.

But then he pointed a finger at her like she was a cartoon villain. "No, no. Don't try this shit with me."

JJ groaned as Avery shrugged, gesturing helplessly at the Twinkie. She was out of magic today.

"Hang on, hang on." JJ jogged over to the Twinkie and returned with a small, dented pot. He popped the lid open and held it out like it was the Holy Grail. "Buff, give that a whiff. Kiara's home batch. A lifetime supply."

Buffy took one deep inhale and went quiet.

"... You should've opened with that," he muttered, snatching the pot and trudging toward the shoreline. And that's how they got Buffy to agree.

From the land, the Pogues watched as Cleo did her best to guide Buffy's placement of the pilings, hand gestures wild as she tried to shout over the water. Meanwhile, Buffy was moving like someone operating on a three-second delay.
