Kenzie rested her head against her couch, enjoying her silence. No case. No chaos.

Or so she thought.

She yelped as her legs were brought down to the ground. The couch dipped as Patrick sat down.

"Kenzie. We're going to Napa. I want you to drive," he said.

"No," she pouted.

"Come on. I read the homicide bulletins. Hot off the press. A John Doe in a duck pond awaits."

"The local cops can handle that." She placed her legs on Patrick's lap. "Now, let me rest in silence." She closed her eyes before she realized what city he said. "Wait a minute. Napa? That's Sheriff McAllister's jurisdiction. You wanna go and investigate a Red John suspect."

"Investigating is your thing. I'd just like to get to know him a little better." Patrick slightly frowned as Kenzie removed her legs from his lap. They got up. Patrick grabbed her jacket and helped her put it on. "Shall we?"

"I guess," she sighed.

🙂

Kenzie and Patrick walked up to a pond full of birds and ducks. Police were scattered around the area while the two stared at the dead body in the water.

"Gardening crew found the body submerged in the pond," said Patrick.

"It doesn't look like he was in the water for more than a few hours," Kenzie said, tilting her head. "There's a contusion on the back of the skull. I'm guessing someone caught him from behind. What was he doing behind a church in the middle of the night?" She turned to the officers next to her. "Any personal belongings?"

"No wallet or cell phone," said the officer. "Just a money roll in his front pocket. $32 in small bills."

Kenzie turned to see Patrick feeding the ducks. She let out a small sigh. "Hey, Patrick? Care to offer your opinion?"

"These ducks love muffins," he called out.

"So helpful."

"Look at 'em go!"

"I see the cavalry has arrived." Kenzie turned to see Sheriff McAllister walking toward her.

"Sheriff McAllister," Kenzie greeted.

"Agent Patterson. What, uh... What brings your crack team to our little slice of heaven?"

"Oh, you know, any excuse to get up to wine country."

"Well, we always welcome the help, but I expect I can handle this one."

Patrick walked up to the two. "Well, to be honest, it was, uh, it was me that wanted to come out here," he explained.

"Is that a fact?"

"Well, more of a feeling. I think there's more out here than meets the eye."

"How so?"

"You don't feel it?"

"No."

"What's your take?"

"On what?"

"Our friend."

"Well, let's have a look." The sheriff turned to the pond. They stared at a tattoo. "One five six. You suppose he's repping his code?"

"Area code 156 is reserved for telemarketers, so I'm guessing no."

"Well... he's kind of a slack-looking fella. Gloomy, even for a corpse. You know, cheap clothes, no muscle tone. Uh, sedentary low-income job."
