A knock on the door caused them to be separate. Patrick got up. Kenzie's head tilted in confusion at the well-dressed man standing in her doorway.

"Agent Patterson," said the man. "Bob Kirkland, Homeland Security. We don't know each other, but we need to talk."

Kirkland made eye contact with Patrick. "Do I know you?" Patrick asked.

"No. I know you," he said.

Kirkland nodded his head goodbye before walking out. Kenzie and Patrick made eye contact with each other, noting the agent's weirdness.

Patrick was waiting in the living room with Lilly. She was sitting down on the couch. They both let out a sigh.

He leaned against the wall in the hallway. "Kenz, Lilly's gonna be late."

"Oh, no. I can be late all I want. I can be patient," Lilly stated.

Patrick gave her an amused look. Kenzie rushed out of her room, putting her arm through her sleeve.

"Sorry. I lost track of time," she panted. "Let's go."

"Do I have to?" Kenzie glared at her. "Never mind. What was I thinking?"

🙂

The two were under a bridge while multiple police officers and FBI agents were spread out. They stood in front of yellow police tape. Kenzie raised her badge.

"Agent Patterson, Jane, CBI," she stated.

"Sorry," said an FBI agent. "FBI personnel only."

"Hey. I don't want to be here either, but we were invited. Could you tell Agent Reede Smith that we're here as requested?" As soon as the agent left, Kenzie leaned up to Patrick. "What do you think Smith wants?"

"I don't know," answered Patrick. "What do you think?"

"I'm thinking I want to go home."

"Really? Can't tell."

"Really?" she mocked.

Agent Smith walked up to them. Patrick lifted the tape, letting Kenzie go under first.

"Jane, Patterson. Thanks for coming," Smith said.

"Miss this?" Patrick rhetorically asked. "Who could say no?"

"How can we help you, Agent Smith?" Kenzie asked.

"We caught a body. I thought it might interest you."

"And why would you say that?"

"You tell me." The three of them stopped in front of the badly burned victim. Patrick inhaled sharply while Kenzie grimaced at the sight. "This is Benjamin Marx. The guy you buried alive."

"Excuse me," said Patrick. "The killer I buried alive. And I did let him out– eventually."

"Not bad. That's a tough ID, considering most of his face is burnt off. What do you think happened to him?"

"You're the FBI," remarked Kenzie. "I'm sure you've got answers in that big head of yours."

Smith ignored Kenzie's comment. "Tell me what I've come up with."

"Well, the first thing you'd notice is that he was tortured– with fire and whatever it is people use to cut someone's thumbs off," Patrick explained.
