SPOILER WARNING: Red John's identity is revealed in this chapter.

Kenzie groaned, barely able to hear anything except for the ringing being drilled into her head. She slowly sat up, touching the back of her head. Relief washed over her, not finding any blood on her fingers.

She got up, staggering into the wreckage. Something pulled her back, causing her to raise her fist.

"It's me. Kenzie, it's me," said Teresa. She sighed in relief. "You shouldn't be up."

"He's in there," Kenzie rasped. She looked down to see a flashlight in Teresa's holster. "Give me that." She snatched it and started staggering toward the wreckage, ignoring Teresa's cries.

The flashlight illuminated the broken walls, and dust flew around. She turned her attention to the sound of groaning. Agent Smith slowly tried to get up.

"Agent Smith, it's Mackenzie Patterson. Are you okay?" she asked.

"What happened?" Smith asked.

"There was an explosion. The EMTs are on their way. They're gonna help you." Kenzie's eyes shifted toward the three dots on Smith's shoulder. She raised her gun. "Don't move!"

"What?" He got up.

"Put your hands in the air, or I'll shoot!"

"Whoa, whoa, whoa– Okay, listen, I don't know what you're talking about. You're clearly making a big mistake."

Neither of them made a move. Kenzie got distracted by something moving out of the corner of her eyes. Smith raised his gun and fired. Kenzie ducked, accidentally letting Smith leave.

She turned to see Bertram getting up. "Which way did Smith go?" Kenzie rushed over to him. "Oh, my god, Patterson."

"We have to find Smith. He's Red John."

"I'll get help."

Bertram walked off. Kenzie gasped at a familiar head of hair. She rushed over and pushed off some debris. Patrick lies on the ground with his eyes closed.

"Patrick? Can you hear me?"

🙂

Kenzie stood in the ICU with her arms crossed, staring at Patrick. Cho slid the curtain, gaining Kenzie's attention.

"You okay?" Cho asked.

"I'm fine," she replied. "The doctors say Patrick's stable. There's no major trauma or anything. He's just not awake."

Kenzie gave Patrick one last look before walking into the hallway with Cho.

"They found the remains of three people," Cho explained. "Positive IDs for Bret Stiles, Ray Haffner, and Thomas McAllister."

"You sure? I would think Stiles would survive a nuclear attack."

"The bodies are all burnt to a crisp, but the crime techs did spot DNA tests. Coroner's office checked it against medical records. Stiles, Haffner, and McAllister are all positively dead."

"What about Smith? Any sightings?"

"Not yet. Rigsby and Van Pelt are on it."

Teresa walked over to them and gave Kenzie a hug. They stayed like this for a while before Kenzie pulled back.

"I'll be back," she muttered.

She walked back to Patrick's room and opened the curtains. Bertram stood over Patrick.
