"Patrick has worked out that Red John is one of seven men. But Red John also knows the seven names on Jane's list."
"Ok. I'm gonna give you the seven names, and I need you to put a GPS bug on each of their cell phones. But you have to do it secretly. Don't tell anyone. Can you do that?"
–
She walked outside and called Grace. "Boss, the wires are up," said Grace.
"All of them?"
"Yep. GPS and audio on all seven Red John suspects."
"Good. We watch them very closely. Log everywhere they go."
–
"You are out of your depth. You can't–"
"I can't what? What can't I do?!"
"Kenz–"
"I'm not like you, Patrick. I can't place my feelings on hold! At least I'm doing something." Her voice broke. "I'm not getting kidnapped again. But, you know what? Do whatever the fuck you want. You want this to be your case. It's yours."
–
"We have an anonymous tip directed to your unit," said the dispatcher. "A person or persons in distress at 5570 West Huron."
"At 5570 West Huron," repeated Teresa, writing it down.
Kenzie looked at the GPS signals on her monitor. "Brett Partridge is there," she gasped.
–
"Partridge? Partridge," Teresa softly called out.
"T..." Partridge gasped. "T... tiger. T... tiger."
He let out his last breath before falling limp. Kenzie grabbed Teresa's wrist, recognizing the poem.
"Come on," pleaded Kenzie. "Let's go. We gotta go."
Suddenly, Teresa was pulled back. "Res!"
Kenzie was pulled back from behind as well. She managed to fight back, elbowing her attacker. The last thing she felt was something hitting the back of her head.
–
He answered the call, putting it on speaker. "Kenzie, finally," sighed Patrick.
"Sorry, Patrick. Kenzie can't come to the phone right now."
Kenzie whimpered as she felt something getting drawn on her face with blood.
🙂
Kenzie continued staring at the ground as her ears continued to ring. She didn't notice the paramedics coming into the house or Patrick. They checked her vitals. She was fine physically.
Seeing the blank stare, the paramedics didn't make any move to touch her. She was knocked out of her dissociation when Patrick tried to pick her up. She struggled in his arms.
He gripped her tightly. "It's okay," he reassured. "It's me, honey. It's me."
She stopped squirming. "Patrick?" he hesitantly whispered.
"Yeah, it's me, Kenz."
"Res–"
"It is okay. She's in the ambulance. She's just unconscious."
Kenzie nodded slowly before leaning into his chest. The two walked out of the house. Kenzie tried to ignore all of the flashing lights and loud conversations from officers.
