The Hydra base loomed like a fortress, its cold metallic structure a stark reminder of the organization's sinister motives. The Avengers had infiltrated the base, each hero moving with precision and purpose. Among them was Diana Barnes, the protégé of Bucky Barnes. She moved with grace and efficiency, every step a testament to her rigorous training.
"Stay sharp, Diana," Bucky's voice came through her comms.
"I've got this," Diana replied, her tone steady, though her heartbeat was a little quicker than usual. She wanted to prove herself—not just to Bucky but to the entire team.
As they advanced, an unexpected sight stopped them in their tracks. Three teenagers—two boys and a girl—stood blocking their path. Their movements were mechanical, their expressions blank, and their glowing eyes betrayed Hydra's control over them.
"Bionic soldiers?" Steve Rogers muttered, his shield ready.
"More like bionic teenagers," Tony Stark quipped, scanning them with his HUD. "And not your average ones, either."
Diana's attention locked on the boy at the center of the trio. His calculated movements, the way he analyzed their group—it was too familiar. Her heart sank as recognition struck.
"Chase?" she whispered, her voice barely audible. But there was no response; his expression remained cold and unfeeling.
Before she could process the revelation, Chase charged at her with inhuman speed. Diana barely had time to brace herself as his enhanced reflexes matched her every move in hand-to-hand combat. Each strike felt like a test of her limits, but Diana's determination kept her grounded.
"Diana, fall back!" Bucky called out, worry lacing his voice.
"I can handle this!" she shouted back, dodging a kick that would've sent her flying. But her footing betrayed her, and she slipped near the edge of a massive drop into darkness below. Her fingers scrambled to grab onto the metal ledge, and she hung precariously, staring up at the face of her attacker—her twin brother.
"Chase!" she yelled, desperation in her voice. "You have to remember who you are! You're Chase Davenport, the world's first bionic superhuman! You're my twin brother!"
Her words echoed in the cavernous base, but Chase didn't respond.
"Please!" Diana pleaded, her grip slipping slightly. "You're the only person who's always come first to me. You're older by five minutes, and I love you more than anyone in the world! Please, Chase, fight it!"
For a moment, nothing happened. Then, a flicker of something human passed through his glowing eyes. His features softened, and the glow vanished, replaced by his natural hazel eyes. Chase blinked, disoriented, and his gaze fell to Diana, dangling on the edge.
"Oh my God!" he gasped, dropping to his knees. "Diana!" Without hesitation, he reached down, grabbing her hand and pulling her back onto solid ground. As soon as she was safe, he pulled her into a tight embrace, trembling. "I almost—Diana, I'm so sorry."
"It's okay," she whispered, clutching him just as tightly. "You're back, Chase. That's all that matters."
They didn't have time to dwell on the moment. The other two bionic teens—Adam and Bree—were still under Hydra's control, advancing toward the Avengers with lethal precision.
"We can't fight them like this," Chase said, his voice shaking. "They're too strong."
"Then how do we stop them?" Steve demanded.
"There's an override app," Chase explained quickly, tapping his temple as he activated his bionic interface. "I can shut down their bionics manually, but it's going to take everything I've got."
Diana nodded, determination burning in her eyes. "Then I'll help. I'll reinforce your force field so you don't have to waste energy maintaining it."
Chase hesitated, but her unwavering gaze gave him the confidence he needed. "Okay. Let's do this."
As Chase focused, his bionic eyes glowed faintly, scanning the interface in his mind. Diana placed her hands on his shoulders, channeling her abilities to stabilize the force field surrounding him. The strain was evident on Chase's face, sweat beading on his forehead as he worked to override Hydra's control.
"Hurry!" Tony shouted as Adam launched a plasma blast toward them. Steve deflected it with his shield, but the Avengers were running out of time.
"I'm almost there," Chase muttered, his voice strained. Finally, he found the override. With a final surge of effort, he deactivated Adam and Bree's bionics. Both teens collapsed, unconscious but alive.
Chase swayed, his strength nearly depleted. Diana caught him, wrapping her arms around his middle to steady him. "I've got you," she whispered, guiding him out of the base.
As they exited, Bucky and Steve helped carry Adam and Bree. Once they were all aboard the Quinjet, Bucky approached Diana, pulling her into a protective hug. "You scared the hell out of me, kid."
She hugged him back, her heart still racing. "I'm okay, Dad. And...I want you to meet someone." She turned to Chase, who was leaning against the wall, exhausted but alert. "This is Chase. My twin brother."
Bucky's eyes widened in surprise. "Twin brother? Diana, you never said—"
"We were separated at birth," she explained quickly. "But I've met him a couple of times during S.H.I.E.L.D missions. His hazel eyes—I'd never forget them."
Steve joined them, his expression serious. "Adam, Bree, and Chase will be staying with us until we figure this out."
Chase nodded. "We were ambushed on a mission. Hydra took us. Our father...he's probably losing his mind looking for us."
Diana guided Chase to one of the seats, helping him lie down. He rested his head in her lap, his breathing uneven as she ran her fingers through his hair, calming him. "You're safe now," she murmured.
Adam and Bree soon stirred and joined them. Bree's eyes narrowed as she looked at Diana. "Wait a minute—you're our sister? Chase, you never told us!"
"I couldn't," Chase admitted, his voice weak. "She's an Avenger. I didn't want her to become a target because of us."
Bree huffed, crossing her arms. "I always wanted a sister, and you kept this from me?"
"Bree, I didn't have a choice," Chase said softly. Adam, for once, seemed to understand, nodding in agreement.
Bree's expression softened, and she turned to Diana. "Are you...coming back with us?"
Diana shook her head. "Douglas might be my biological father, but my parental rights are with Bucky. I don't want to leave him."
Chase's hand found hers, his grip firm despite his exhaustion. "Then I'll talk to Mr. Davenport. I'll convince him to let me stay. I'm not leaving you, Diana."
Her heart swelled at his determination. For the world's most intelligent man, he was also the most endearing. And, as she realized, the most handsome. No one had ever cared about her this much before.
"You're amazing, you know that?" she whispered, brushing a strand of hair from his face. He smiled faintly, his hazel eyes filled with warmth.
As the Quinjet soared toward safety, Diana felt a sense of completeness she hadn't known was missing. Her family was fractured but mending, and for the first time, she believed they'd be whole again.
