THE SOFT hum of conversation filled the quaint cafe near the university. Students dotted the tables, sipping lattes and tapping away on their laptops. Despite the relaxed atmosphere, Yeseup felt anything but calm.
Chaerin had practically dragged her to the farthest table, away from the prying eyes and ears, yet Yeseul still felt the weight of their stares. Whispers from the nearby tables sliced through her thoughts, louder than they were meant to be.
"I can't believe her."
"First Heeseung, now Sunghoon?"
"Does she think she's in some kind of drama?"
Yeseul's grip tightened on her coffee cup, the ceramic warm against her trembling fingers.
"Hey." Chaerin's voice cut through the din, firm but not unkind. She leaned across the table, her brows furrowed with concern. "Don't mind them too much, okay? They're just bored idiots with nothing better to do."
Yeseul forced a nod, though her stomach churned. Chaerin studied her for a moment before sighing back on her chair.
"Alright, spill it," Chaerin said, crossing her arms. "What the hell is going on, Seul? Why do you need everyone to think you're dating Sunghoon? And don't give me some half-assed excuse. You're not exactly subtle."
Yeseul looked down at her cup, swirling the remnants of her drink as if it held answers she needed. She hesitated, the words catching in her throat.
"Chaerin..." she began, her voice barely above a whisper. "It's...complicated."
"No kidding," Chaerin shot back, though her tone softened. "Look, I'm not judging you. I just want to understand what's going on. First, there's this whole Sunghoon thing, now that photo of you and Heeseung from high school starts making the rounds. People are losing their minds over this, Seul."
Yeseul swallowed hard, her hands trembling slightly. Finally, she set her cup down and looked Chaerin in the eye.
"Okay," she said, taking a deep breath. "I'll tell you everything."
She explained it all- the rumors, the fake dating arrangement with Sunghoon, the unintended chaos caused by Chaerin's post. She admitted how overwhelmed she felt, how the stares and whispers had grown louder, suffocating her.
By the time she finished, her shoulders sagged with the weight of the confession. Chaerin sat back, processing everything in silence.
