ADRIAN
Everything Kenna had told me about her father lingered in my head as she went into the kitchen. I couldn't move from the spot I stood.
The mention of her father and his drinking made everything in me stiffen. I never had a bad parent, both of mine were amazing and would have loved Kenna like she was their own.
Knowing there was more to her past and the fact she found I made her feel safe had Rafe and I happy. Even though we have been with her for one night, it shows our mate bond was working between us.
"We will make her our family," Rafe whined, his voice thick with emotion. Like me, he had hated everything she had told us and wasn't looking forward to the rest.
Shaking my thoughts away, I spun on my heel and headed into the kitchen where Kenna was making some kind of pasta with sauce for us to eat while she continued our conversation. I went to the coffee machine and made us some drinks like she suggested I do.
Not long after, Kenna and I were sitting in the lounge with bowls in our laps and our coffees on the coffee table in front of us.
Kenna began eating while I took some bites when she started to speak. "At ten, my father changed drastically with me. It was like a switch had been flipped. It wasn't all in one hit just enough to make me see something was up."
Kenna leaned back and left the fork in her bowl. Moving slightly to get comfortable, I leaned back and stared at her while eating as she continued with what had happened to her. "There were no more board game nights, only shouting and telling me more hurtful things about how I ruined his life."
A low growl rumbled deep within from Rafe, but I ignored him. He had been close by and staying quiet throughout the entire time. Part of me knew there were some stuff we would find hard to muster or even let our head let in, but we needed to be there for Kenna, our mate.
"One night after school, I headed back home only to find four men in the house. I never saw them before," she said, which made me pray this story was not leading to where it was heading as she continued. "Nothing happened, since they were trying to get money from my father. He had borrowed money from them, and they were to shake him down for it."
Kenna's face seemed to go blank and then on autopilot she began to tell us what happened, while looking away from me. "I was told to go to my room which is what I did until I heard noises downstairs. A man screaming, which I knew was my father, but I was too scared to move or leave to find out what happened. Then there was more shouting and yelling from the men, all with deep voices."
Kenn shook her head, like she didn't believe what she was saying but soon it was what she said next made me question if she was drawn to our kind, because what she stated next was a scene I never thought a human, let alone a woman, or child would see.
"What I am going to say happened was nothing I have ever heard before," she stated, her eyes on me but she still wore a blank expression. "There was a sound of snapping, snapping of bones but not to someone since they weren't screaming in pain or I would have thought it would be my father, but there was nothing. Until I heard growling. I mean wolf growling like I hear around here. I never put it together until now, but it sounded like there were animals in my house."
Her face paled slightly and looked away, her eyes on her bowl which was now long forgotten. "I ran and hid under my bed while putting my fingers in my ears since I started to hear some inhumane sounds. For what felt for hours I stayed there till I heard the door open and close. That was when I got up and left my room, only to walk into a huge mess."
Kenna looked up and stared at me. "Everything we owned was ripped up all over the floor or broken. Whatever valuables was taken, which wasn't a lot and if I was not mistaken, even my money box with all the loose change I had collected from when my father was drunk and would forget he had was also gone."
A lone tear slipped down her face as she looked away and ahead. "The only thing that wasn't right beside what I heard, there was no sign of my father or the men. It was like they disappeared."
Kenna took a breath, while I moved my bowl and even grabbed hers to place on the table before us. I leaned back and placed my hand over hers to give her some sort of comfort till she spoke again. Tingles rippled through me, while she looked at our joined hands.
"It wasn't long after that when some people came to collect me and told me I was to be placed into foster care since my father couldn't look after me anymore," she said with a whimper. "I never saw him after that. No word. No acknowledgement of what happened."
"When I asked where he was and about the men, everyone shook their heads and told me a little child should never been put in the position I was in. Whatever that meant."
I said nothing. There was nothing I could say, even though part of me wanted to know more about who those people were that came to see her and take her away, but she went onto tell me what happened after.
"After the people had helped me pack some things I needed, like clothes and what I wanted to keep. I was then taken to a social worker, and then they were gone like ships in a night. No word, nothing. I was placed in twelve foster homes and even ran away from some of them because I could never get along with many of the other children."
Twelve foster homes.
No wonder she was alone and never had anyone.
Clearing my throat, which made Kenna looked at me. "Where any of the homes nice at least?" It seemed like a stupid question, but I needed to know she had at least one good family experience.
"There were a few but I had to leave because of too many children," she stated with a heavy sigh. "After the twelfth, I ran away and started to work in a little café with an elderly woman who gave me a room for a few months. I worked in little jobs, saving and moved till I found a better one and had some money behind me to do an online course in business. Once completed, I wanted to look for something better and then I found my old job."
She looked at me for a moment.
I knew this was the part I needed to know since it was all about the pack we were waiting to have come here. Maybe I could use whatever she tells me to help understand what's going on.
Kenna shook her head and looked at me for a moment before she spoke again. "Before I carry on, let me take the bowls and mugs to the kitchen. Make a fresh mug of coffee for us and then I will get back to why I came here."
As much as I wanted to say no, Kenna moved up and didn't want my reply. After everything she spoke about, maybe she needed a rest from all the pain that she had to tell me. She did state this would be the first time she ever spoke aloud when it came to her past.
That thought alone had Rafe and my heart plummeting into emptiness. I wanted nothing more than to take everything back and be there during those hard times. Make everything go away, but I know that would never happen but at least we can value what we want for her and give her the family she will want. Hell, she already got a pack behind her that she doesn't know about and most importantly—me.
