ADRIAN
Walking back into the house, I slammed the door behind me.
Anger swirled around inside as I remembered what happened moments ago with Kenna. I thought I could see her want for me, but something held her back.
The thought of someone else working at her house was riling me up more. No one was going to help her—only me.
Rafe was in my head, chanting every goddamn word he wanted to make me claim her against the counter. I was on the verge of doing so until she changed her demeanor with me.
Glancing over to the reappeared meal I was about to make before my mate fell off the ladder, I shook my head and walked away, heading to the couch. I fall on it with a thud and lean back, staring at the ceiling. Why did she act like that?
A mind link came through from Catrina. "Hey, Ad," she said in my head. "How's it going?"
Maybe Catrina will know what happened. I explained what had happened to Kenna in fine detail, but when I finished, she sighed. "Well, Lewis will be pissed that she lied to him about the ladder," she murmured. I growled. Is that all she got from that?
"Do you know why she would change so suddenly?" I asked.
Catrina was quiet for a few seconds before she talked again. "I don't know, Ad," she said. "Kenna doesn't say much about her life, not why she moved here."
I frowned.
"I thought you were friends," I murmured.
"We are work colleagues," she said flatly. "I have tried to talk to her more, but she seems to be all about that house or in her own little world."
Don't I know it?
We sat in silence for a moment. "I don't know what to do," I murmured. "How am I going to get her to be with me?"
"Adrian," Catrina sighed. "We all are here to help you. What do you want us to do?"
I stared ahead, trying to think of an answer when she spoke again. "Ad, why don't you go to the pack house?" she said, making me frown. "Why?"
"Well, a few reasons," she said. "First, talk to Alpha Maddox about what happened. Maybe he can look into her past for you and figure out what got her acting like this. And second, you might want to tell him about her looking for someone to fix her roof. He can tell everyone she gets in contact with not to. Then she will have to come to you for help."
I could agree with most of that, but part of me was annoyed with what she was saying. It was embarrassing. But she was right. I have to make sure she doesn't get anyone else, or Rafe will want to kill them.
Rafe grumbled in my head in agreement with the last statement. He already was besotted with her, and if any man came near her, I wouldn't like to think about what he would do.
"Kill them," he growled.
Ignoring him, I sighed. "Okay," I said. "I will go to the pack house. Are you and Lewis there?"
"Yeah," she said. "How about we meet up in the pack hall for lunch, and we can come up with some other ideas for you?"
"Okay," I muttered. "I will see you there in a few minutes."
I closed the mind link down and looked toward the fireplace. I needed to get away from here. The thought of seeing Kenna now only made my heart break slightly. I wanted to be with her, but I needed to win her over.
Letting out a sigh, I moved off the couch and left what I had already out for cooking. I will do that later when I get back.
I walked to the door and headed outside in the direction of the pack house. Keeping my eyes focused and not wandering over to Kenna's place, I needed to show I wasn't interested if she was looking.
I moved quickly through the forest until I came to the big building we called our pack house. It was located away from the town, where wolves could feel safe and where we could meet and shift with no one seeing us.
All werewolves lived around the town but worked there. It was a safe place everyone felt when a human came in, like Kenna did. We all knew we had to be on our best behavior.
I opened the door, and there was a food armor smell lingering in the air of beef stew, which made my stomach growl. I walked straight to the hall and looked around until my eyes found who I was looking for—Lewis and Catrina.
I headed over to them and took a seat. Catrina smiled. "I will get you some food," she said, looking at me and Lewis. "I will let you both talk for a moment."
Catrina got up and walked away. My eyes went to my brother, who was grinning. "So, she tells me your little mate lied to me about why she needed the ladder," he said, making me groan.
Lewis chuckled.
"I knew she was lying when she told me she wanted to sort out her gutters," he said, looking at me with a knowing look. "So, how bad is it?"
I groaned.
"Bad," I murmured. "She has a few slats missing, and the gutters need changing."
Lewis's face hardened. "I can't understand why Alpha Maddox let her buy the place," he grunted. "We all knew it needed work."
"I think he thought he was helping me out," I sighed as I looked to the side to see Catrina talking to Luna Elsie. "I think he thought she would contact me for help. But she never did."
Lewis nodded.
"Did Catrina tell you what happened at her place?" I asked.
Lewis gave me a knowing look and a slight nod.
"What the hell am I going to do?" I asked. "She doesn't want me to do the work."
Lewis stared at me for a moment and leaned back in his chair. "Did you ever consider that you make her nervous, and she doesn't know how to feel toward you?"
I stared at him, dumbfounded, as he continued. "I remember when Declan met his human mate," he said. "He told me that when they talked about the beginning, she mentioned she felt a pull and was scared that it was a joke or something."
Could that be a reason? I saw her tense and the longing in her eyes when I had her pinned between me and the counter, but it was short-lived as if she didn't know what to do there or something.
Her arousal flooded my senses, and it took everything in me not to devour it in one second.
"Could be," I muttered, shaking the image of having her spread out like my next meal. A bowl was placed before me. I looked up to see Catrina smiling back at me. "Luna Elise said she will let Alpha Maddox know you want to talk to him."
I nodded and looked at my brother, who gave me a strange look. Part of me wanted to ask him what it was, but he shook his head and turned his attention to Catrina. They spoke a little while I ate, and when I was done, I sighed and leaned back in my chair when a mind link came through from Alpha Maddox.
"I'm free if you want to see me," he said.
"Sure," I said, closing the mind link down.
"I'm going to see Alpha Maddox," I murmured as I moved up from the table and headed to the corridor where his office was.
