Chapter 55

ADRIAN

All I could hear was crying from behind the door. Rafe whimpered in my head, slamming against me with force to take control for him to see her, but I held him back.

All this could be avoided, and now I was back at square one again with my mate hating me. Not wanting anything to do with me.

Alpha Maddox had guards waiting outside the house for Alpha James, who then took him off Lewis and my hands. It took six of them to have control over him, which seemed excessive, but we couldn't touch him even though I got a few punches in when we fought in Kenna's home, which come to think about it must have been a mess.

A pang hit my chest; her cries were loud which made my heart break for her.

All this was too much to take any of it in, and to be confronted not just by her ex but her old boss too.

"Mate," Rafe whimpered. "Want to see mate. She was hurt, her neck."

That's when an image of the blood that trickled out of the little wounds that were made from alpha James's claw. Panic set in and banged on the door harder. "Kenna! Open the door!"

Nothing. Only her cries, which were starting to get to me. I needed to be in there. I needed to make sure she was safe and not in pain.

"Kenna!" I shouted and banged again on the door. When that didn't work, I rested my head on it and closed my eyes. Listening in to her cries, which were breaking my heart.

I don't know how long I was standing there but someone placed their hand on my shoulder, giving me a squeeze. "Brother, she needs time."

Those words made my eyes open and twist my head to see Lewis staring at me, his eyes full of concern. Most of it was for my mate, who was still crying behind the door, but they were also locked on me.

Was I showing I was slowly losing it?

"Brother, please." Lewis's words sounded like a plea, but it was Catrina who made me move.

"Ad today has been too much for her. She had found out what we all are, let alone see someone shift a few times," she said, making me take a step back from the door and look at her. Her eyes were nowhere on me, only on the door behind. Clearly worried about her friend, then her eyes went to mine and that's when I noticed she was holding back her tears.

A lone one escaped but she managed to speak again. "She needs a few days to wrap her head around everything and she will—"

"I'm not leaving her," I stated, cutting her off but it was the voice behind her that made me tense.

"Yes, you will, Adrian." Alpha Maddox voice came, thick with emotion which wasn't hard to tell what he was feeling which was like the rest of us but he still had to be my alpha, even though it was written on his face that he didn't want to do what he was about to do to me.

"You are going to help with the clean up of what happened with the rogue attack," he said, which made me open my mouth to speak but he shook his head to stop me and continued to tell me what I was supposed to do while my mate was crying behind me.

Rafe was still whimpering, but even he went silent when Alpha Maddox spoke. "After that, you are to stay in the pack house with Lewis and me. We have council members coming to talk and deal with what happened with Alpha James. You need to be around to tell them what he had told you."

"I shouldn't be there, I should be—" I started to say but I look to the door and let out a sigh. Catrina and he are right, I need to be away from.

Alpha Maddox said nothing for a long while till I heard footsteps while my eyes were trained on the door. His hand touched my shoulder that Lewis had let go of, but I knew he was close. My brother is always close by, even when I need him to leave me alone. He never will, always worried about me.

Taking my eyes off the door, where a soft sniffle came now and not harsh crying that was happening moments ago and looked toward my friend, who gave me a small smile and let his eyes land on the door too long before he looked at me again.

Alpha Maddox let out a sigh. "I know this is hard for Rafe and you, but we need you. The pack needs you." He let his words sit with me for a moment before he continued. "There are no deaths, only rogues which is a blessing in disguise really, but we need to get rid of the bodies."

I said nothing, while he spoke softer somehow. "I need you with me in the office as you and Lewis are the only ones who know what he said and that is not it, we will have to explain about Kenna."

That part had me tense. Why would they want to know Kenna, then it hit me. She was human, no human should have gone through what she had in one day, let alone being attacked by an alpha and beta.

I looked at my friend when he spoke again. "And as Catrina said, she needs time."

"She can't be alone," I said, a little too quietly.

Alpha Maddox nodded. "I know that that's why I am thinking Catrina could stay put for a while and if nothing happens, I will post a guard close to the tree over there. Out of sight, out of mind."

"She may run," I said, panic lacing each word.

Alpha Maddox looked at me, seeing clearly what was on my face. "No, she won't. She will want answers to the questions she has running in her head, and we will give them to her when she is ready, but for now she needs to have this space to let her mind settle and her thoughts to stop too."

I said nothing since there was no point in arguing with the man. He would have my ass thrown in jail if I went behind his back.

Rafe wasn't happy with what was being said, and I tried to calm him, but Alpha Maddox spoke to Rafe who wasn't amused with what he said. "Rafe, you need to listen and calm down. Your mate needs space and has seen more than any human has seen of our kind in an evening. That part is understandable, but I am telling you know, you come here or even start in on anyone, I will put your ass in a cell, and you won't be seeing your mate until she asks for you personally."

That part had Rafe dumbfounded and even got excited by the thought until I explained that Kenna knew nothing about him, except of what she saw. Then I had to explain Alpha Maddox was making sure he understood and he did, even though he huffed like a big baby.

"Look, Lewis will help you and will stay with you till Catrina either talks to her or Kenna comes to you," Alpha Maddox said, making me look toward the door before I gave him a nod.

There was no arguing with my alpha after all, but I knew I needed to say one thing before I leave.

"Make sure you stay with me at all times," I stated to my brother. "I am giving her the space she needs but I also not a patient Lycan like you, brother so I will need your guidance and strength with this, even if you have to tackle me to the ground and lock me up."

Looking over to my brother, who had a stupid smirk on his face and clearly liking the idea of what I said a little too much, I rolled my eyes.

Rafe huffed but seemed highly amused by what I said. "Him tackling us? Really?"

Knowing where his head was going, I chose to ignore him and lock onto the door again with Rafe coming closer. There was no sound now, which meant she had either moved away from the door and into her room or was somewhere else but as of right now, I had no clue or was allowed to do anything.

Not saying anything, I close my eyes and then move away while opening them to walk away to head to what Alpha Maddox wanted me to go. I could Lewis keeping up, but he never said a word. He knew me all too well which was a good thing.
