ADRIAN
"Well, I would love to get you wet."
That's what I can come up with. I was such a dork.
Rafe chuckled, but I ignored him. There was no point in entertaining him.
Catching Kenna checking me out took everything in me to hold my damn Lycan back and charge at her to have her against a wall like a raving lunatic.
Her arousal coated the surrounding air, knowing we were affecting her like she was with me. I wanted her to look at the bulge I had growing in my damn pants and have her on her knees.
Fuck.
I needed to stop being like this; I was starting to act crazy.
Shaking my thoughts away, I looked over my shoulder and looked at the weather. It was picking with rain, which meant it was going to get heavy when we got to the cottage. This wasn't going to be easy.
Looking back at Kenna, I knew we had to leave. "Come on," I muttered, stepping back from her. "We need to get going."
Kenna looked at me and gave me a nod. Something was written on her face, but it was hard to tell. Kenna moved away and walked toward the door while I followed behind like a lost puppy.
Most pack members didn't know who she was to me since Alpha Maddox thought I should wait until I knew the deal with that Beta that would be here. The security guard I was talking to gave me a knowing look and grinned. He mind-linked me what the deal was, and I explained it all to him. Although he was shocked, he concealed it on his face. He nodded and wished me well, saying I would need it.
Damn, did I know it? This was going to hell until I could tell her about our kind.
Rafe was close by, watching her every move. I walked away, my eyes boring into her head. If I looked lower, I knew I would be done. Who would want to watch their mate sway their ass when she walked away?
We stepped outside the office and headed to the truck, which I had packed outside the office. As soon as Kenna got into the truck, the rain started. I ran over to the driver's side and got in.
Feeling my t-shirt stuck to my skin, I knew it was stuck to my body, but I started the engine and headed back to our cottages.
The drive was slightly silent for a moment before Kenna spoke. "Is the roof sorted?" she asked, making me look at her.
"Yeah," I said, looking back to the road. I needed to concentrate on the road. "I finished after two hours. All the materials I had from a job I did before, so I used them up."
Kenna said nothing for a moment but then sighed. "I should have asked you from the start," she mumbled. "Not thinking I could do it all myself. It could have ended up needing more work done."
I chuckled.
"You wanted to be independent," I said, looking at her. When I said, "You wanted to be independent," I saw her looking at me, but I glanced away to look at the road ahead since the rain was coming down harder. "It is a good thing to be independent. You need to realize that it's okay to ask for help when you need it."
"That part I am now getting," she said. "I never had that before."
"What do you mean by that?" I asked, frowning while I stared ahead while I spoke.
I noticed Kenna staring out the window and lost in deep thoughts as the silence filled the truck.
Rafe came close, but I had to look back at the road.
"Mate will tell us when she is ready," he murmured. "She seems sad."
I said nothing to him and kept my eyes on the road.
We noticed that the water had nearly covered the road as we approached Kenna's cottage. "When we get to your place," I murmured, driving slower since I couldn't make heads or tails of where to park. "You go straight into the cottage and get out of this. I will get everything out of the truck."
"You don't have to do—" she said, but I looked back at her once I stopped the truck. I got it as close to the cottage as I could.
"I don't want you to get wet," I said, cutting her off. "You could get ill, and we don't want that."
Kenna stared at me, her eyes searching my face for something, but as I opened my mouth, Kenna's cheeks flushed and looked away. Her eyes were on the cottage while she spoke. "I'm sorry about what I blurted out back then," she said. "About getting used to asking for help since I never had it before. It is because I—"
Kenna stopped and looked at me before she continued. "I don't have any family," she murmured, her eyes glistening at the statement. "I rarely talk about it since I never felt safe with anyone to do so."
Rafe whined at her words, but I stared at her and let her words sink in.
Turning in my seat, I moved my hand and placed it in hers. I gave her a reassuring squeeze and smile. "You don't have to tell me," I said. "You can when you are ready. I promise you I will keep it safe and look after you."
Kenna stared at me while my words hung in the air while I continued. "How about we go inside?" I asked, making her shake her head and look at me with a smile.
"Okay," she said but moved her head to the side. "Thanks for not pushing for answers. It's not a cheerful story about my life, and I don't want sympathy."
"You won't get it from me," I said without thinking.
Damn, my mouth needed to stop. It was going to get me into trouble.
Rafe huffed, but I could sense his heartache at Kenna's words about her words. They stung me, too, but I didn't know what to say to her, not wanting sympathy.
Kenna looked at me, taken aback at my words, but smiled. "Thanks, I think."
Kenna looked away from me and sighed. "I'm going to get wet," she said, looking back at me. "I think you should stay here until it clears. The couch is comfy to sleep on."
I stared at her, trying to let her words sink in as she opened the door.
"Fuck," she muttered while getting out of the car. She slammed the door and bloated toward the house.
My eyes watched her every move until she had the door open and was inside.
My turn now.
Letting her words sink in about staying in the cottage with her made my heart spike. She felt safe with me, even though we had known each other for twenty-four hours. Maybe this was a sign that she would accept me.
Rafe was close and huffed. "Come on," he muttered. "Get everything inside. I want to be next to mate."
Rolling my eyes, I attempted to get out and remove everything from the truck. This was going to take at least two trips back to the truck, and I was going to get soaked again.
