KENNA
Why was it so hard to talk to him? I mean I spent most of nearly two days with the man and here I was all day contemplating whether I should ring or text him.
All day I kept looking at the damn piece of paper he had given me, like it was hot news before I got out of the vehicle but as soon as I got inside the office, I was put to work straight away.
Catrina was on the phones, which never stopped while I did whatever Maddox wanted me to do. He would shout out orders and even handed me stuff to do, and I did them without complaint. I think the most I enjoyed was spending some time with the children that came in with their parents. I took overlooking after them while I let Maddox deal with the parents and their concern.
I made sure to keep them all entertained by handing out printed colouring sheets with colouring pens. Told them that whoever made the best picture, Mr. Maddox would give them a treat. The only thing anyone had in the office was a box of chocolates, which had been there for a few days. Catrina brought them in when we all were complaining about no snacks.
The woman did manage to leave for fifteen minutes to get another surprise before the parents left. It was nice to see the whole community come together.
Once everything settled slightly, I pulled out the paper from the back of my pocket and stared at it a little longer than intended and decided to take a leap of faith and call him.
Adrian answered on the second ring, and I spoke before he could say anything. "Hi Adrian," I said softly. "It's me, Kenna."
"Kenna, I thought you lost my number," he said, sounding lighter. "Or worst you didn't want to talk to me."
I pretended to let out a mock gasp, while smiling at Catrina. "I would never do that. I wanted to talk to you but as you know we have been swarmed here."
Adrian let out a deep chuckle before he spoke. "That's true. I haven't a had a minute to myself. But you know what, I am looking forward to taking you out on that date once we are finished."
The mere mention of the date had my heart spike suddenly but then something loomed. Where the hell where we were going as some places in the small town were flooded.
"Where are we going?" I asked, trying to stay calm. "I mean, we have had many businesses owners ring telling us about flooding and—"
"I didn't plan anything," he muttered, sounding a little grumpy. "Shit, I forgot Kenna. I have had too many people come up to me and asking me when I can do all the jobs and—"
Feeling slightly deflated but didn't want to show or even sound it. "It can't be helped."
An idea came to mind. He had gone out of his way to get groceries the day of the storm; I could make him a meal. Like we planned originally for me as payment for what he did for me with the roof.
"What about I cook?" I blurted, which made my face flushed slightly.
"I mean, I am supposed to do it as payment for what you did for me with my roof," I said, glancing at Catrina who is now looking at me with a smirk. "We could make it a date night in at my place again."
"I would love that, Kenna," he said, sounding happy but then went silent. "But how are you going to get home. I brought you to work this morning."
Crap, I forgot about that.
"I'll take you," Catrina called out, her voice echoing around the room. My eyes darted to her while I smiled but also wondered how she knew when to say that. Did she hear him?
"Catrina will take me home," I said with a smile.
Why the hell was I getting hot under the collar now?
"Okay, I have one more job which will take another three hours. Will that be enough time for you to cook something," he asked, sounding curious.
"I can try too," I said, wondering what the hell I was now going to make.
Fuck, I wasn't exactly a good cook unless I had a proper recipe I could read from. I might have to use You Tube or something to help me.
"Okay, if you are sure," he said, sounding concerned but I smiled.
"I'll think of something," I said, looking at Catrina who was now placing her coat and looking at me. She had written something on a notepad and held it up to me.
"I know a recipe. He'll love it." The message read.
Sticking up my thumb, I knew I had to leave as I had to get home to get ready and cook something when I heard a loud booming voice in the background. "Adrian! I need your help!"
Poor man was on call now till I didn't know when. Maybe if I do a good job with this meal, I may even ask him to come to me every night till the town is better. At least I will know he has been fed.
Why was I worrying about this man? It wasn't like we were married.
Not yet, an inner voice deep down whispered.
I pushed the thought down, wondering where the hell it came from.
Adrian and I said our goodbyes. Placing my phone in the back of my pocket, Catrina was ready to take me.
We left and even told Maddox we would see him tomorrow for more work. He didn't seem to mind, but seemed okay with us leaving since we didn't give much notice.
Catrina headed outside and headed to her car. The music came on as soon as she turned the ignition on. We drove away, while she told me what I should make.
It didn't take too long till we were back at my place and was parked up. "You know, you'll need to get ready for this date. Why don't I make the food, or start it at least while you get ready?"
I didn't even know whether to kiss the woman or ignore what she said but she was right. I needed to change and even have a shower. But what does one wear on a first date with a man who has been staying at her house for two days?
Umm... black little dress? Something red? No that would make it more sexual than anything.
The mere thought of sexual brought me back to the kiss we did when the storm hit. That was one that send me scoring high and wanting to do that again.
Would he kiss me if he had the chance?
My mind raced over the possibility till I heard Catrina's voice pull me back to her. "Come on, sweetheart. Let's make your man some food and make sure you wear something that will blow his socks off?"
Did she call him my man?
Is it weird that I kind of like the sound of that?
