(Heavy assumptions in this chapter, mainly because I'm making use of the cliff hanger left by [Act I] to imagine all this. But also, why is there nothing on REN??!! Like I can barely find anything about him!! I mostly base his character off his voicelines posted on tumblr by danieyells, it is much needed and appreciated in this desert❤️. My impression of his character from that is; denial final boss 💀 so this short chapter kind of is just that, not very romantic but i hope you feel the cracksss in his mask. Not angst btw dw, or at least idts.)
There was never a time Ren felt like this.
He was supposed to like doing things alone.
He'd been playing every game, watching every show all on his own for the longest time. Interactions in real life overwhelmed him. He didn't like the pretentious 'how are yous' or questions about your day or weekend that people ask when they don't bother remembering them.
But the air in his room felt unnaturally quiet today, hanging heavy like a rain cloud that gloomed over him.
Silence never should have bothered him, only unnecessary noise and people who lacked the concept of boundaries. Primarily, that clown but also, you.
That's right, both of you had gone on another mission right? Not that he actually made the effort to find that out, no. He happened to have overheard it just a few days ago, when you came with some Hotarubi guy. On that day, Ren had never been more grateful to know he didn't have to listen to another moment more of Haru's yodelling, and for a good 3 days when he goes on the mission.
Neither did he have to hide from you in the hallways where you would try to flag him down with a wave and smile, or see you cast awkward glances at him when he worked.
Wasn't this the closest thing to a dream come true?
Apparently not. Not only were the animals extra cranky today without their dad, that weird second year started humming impatiently at the sky halfway through work, leaving everything to Ren. The ghoul put up with only 2 hours and decided he couldn't handle it anymore and retired at 6 p.m.
It wouldn't have been this way if the both of you came back sooner from the mission. Speaking of which, Ren looked at the time on his phone, 8 p.m., yet neither you nor Haru was home. One mission couldn't have been that long, Haru didn't come back so late yesterday and he still saw you in the morning today, all determined to solve the case.
Fine, maybe he was warming up to your presence just a bit more. Maybe he does occasionally let you invade his space and tap him on his shoulder to say hi, perhaps even flash back an equally awkward smile when he caught you looking at him at the diner. Then, your uncertain face would light up from the change in interaction. Ren always found it a little funny that was the case, so he grew accustomed to indulging you. He always thought he was the one being charitable by doing that.
Now, he wasn't so sure who was being charitable.
The creatures below were wailing again, breaking the silence in his room but not in his mind.
"...qu...ace...er...ow...!"
Was someone back? Unmistakably, that scratchy sound most definitely belonged to Sagara. Ren bounced up from his bed when he heard your name.
Lying unconscious in his arms, he carried you up the round hills into the shack while Otonashi flew to him. What the hell happened?
"Dandelion..."
Otonashi shook your body vigorously, trying to wake you up.
"No use Towa, i already tried that... it's like she's in some really deep sleep."
