“OH MY GOD!” Jess screeched. She stood up, back pressed up against the wall, one hand covering her mouth, the other hand pointing at me.

“Did you guys actually…?” She yelled at both River and me.

I looked away, sheepish and embarrassed. I really didn’t want to have this conversation. My eyes caught River’s expression, which was a mask of horror and fear.

“You don’t think you’re pregnant, do you?” River asked, ignoring Jess all together.

My body flinched at the very idea.

“No freaking way. It’s food poisoning!” I exclaimed, not believing that River actually was considering it.

Suddenly Mason and Drew were at the door of the bathroom.

“We brought you some stomach settlers.” Drew offered me the palm of his hand that held two small pills.

I took them quickly, grabbing the bottle of water from his other hand and guzzled down the cold liquid.

“What’s going on?” Mason questioned, noticing how each person was in a different state of shock.

“Alice might be pregnant.” Jess blurted out.

It was my turn to yell.

“Jesus Christ, Jess! I am not! It’s food poisoning!” I was exasperated.

“Holy shit.” Mason muttered, eyes wide, watching me as if I might burst.

“Seriously! I’ve had food poisoning before,” I explained, frustrated that no one believed me. “This is food poisoning!”

Both River, Mason and Drew were silent; River was deep in thought, Mason looked traumatized while Drew did little to hide his anger.

“What are we going to do?” Jess asked, continuing to ignore me.

Why was nobody listening to me? Was I invisible? Did I suddenly go mute from all of the throwing up? Would it be better if I jumped around and sung it?! There was not a single cell in my body that believed I was pregnant but I couldn’t convince the others of that.

“Wait a minute,” Mason gestured for a time out. “I’m pretty sure you don’t show signs of being pregnant after a day…”

I snapped my head at him and practically screamed at him.

“We didn’t do anything yesterday!!”

Why did no one ever believe me!

River groaned, rubbing his eyes.

“At your house though…”

I was brought up short; knowing he was right but also not liking to admit it in front of my entire group of friends.

“Still. River. No. I’m not pregnant. Stop thinking that!” I snapped at him, my stomach turned and I leaned back over the toilet, puking up the pills I had just taken. I wanted to smack myself; for someone who was so adamant about not being pregnant, I wasn’t showing it.

“Gross.” Mason muttered, reading my mind.

“Anyways,” I pretended as if nothing happened. “I have food poisoning. And if you don’t mind, I’m exhausted. So I’m going to bed.”

Slowly, I stood up, grabbing the wastebasket as I did. My reflection caught my attention as I brushed past my friends; my skin was white and transparent, my eyes looked liked they had sunk into my skull. My makeup that was once expertly applied, was smudged all over my face. I looked like a complete mess.
