The album was finished. It was completely mastered and engineered; there was nothing left to do for it. But as Shatter and I stood in the elevator heading up to the office of the executive of our record company, Anothy Harrison of Jurastic Recording, the only thing I could think about was what if we didn’t do enough? What if the people from the label didn’t like what we had done? What would happen? Would we have to scrap everything? Would they void our record deal?
I hand squeezed mine then.
“Alice, there’s no reason to be panicking. They’re going to love it.” Drew encouraged, smiling down at me from my left side.
I leaned my head on his shoulder, trying to calm my breathing with matching it up to his.
The elevator pinged as we reached the top floor, which made me jump. The doors opened up to a spacious area with another set of elevators directly across from the ones we were in.
“Calm down Al. You’re getting too worked up.” Jess commented as we stepped out of the elevator into an ultra modern reception area.
I noticed that her hair was getting longer than the bob she had been styling for so long. Now, her blonde hair was a just touching her shoulders and it was wavy. She wore a blue and white stripped maxi skirt and a white tank top. She looked completely comfortable in her skin but I on the other hand felt like I was in a sauna.
I wore a light pink halter-top that had a big bow over the chest area, tucked into a pair of high-waisted black and white Aztec shorts. But still, I was sweating.
Jeff who accompanied us to the meeting went to talk to the receptionist while Drew, Mason, Jess and I went to sit down on a couch. The couch was definitely purchased because of its sleek design because it was absolutely impossible to get comfortable while sitting on it or maybe I was just beyond getting comfortable. The gold and platinum records on the wall seemed almost like threats.
“What do you think he’ll say?” I questioned, literally at the edge of my seat.
“Will you cut it out?” Jess asked, exasperated. “The album is kickass. They’re going to love it. There is no reason to get yourself all worked up.”
I shut my mouth, but couldn’t stop my knee from shaking.
“Guys, it’s time.” Jeff gestured us forward to the door that stood on one side of the receptionist’s desk.
This was it.
Together we stood up and walked to the door. The other’s seemed to flank me, which only made me even more terrified.
We were meeting the head of the record label that would give us the final thumbs up to sell the album. It mattered if he liked it or not because his support was everything. He was a genius who had signed and helped put out some of the best records of our time. This was a very big deal.
Taking a deep breath, I pushed opened the door to the massive office.
The room we walked into had high ceilings with large windows that looked out on to the San Fernando Valley. The room was bare aside from a large black deck at the end with a couple chairs in front of it.
Anthony Harrison, the head of the label, sat at the desk, barely addressed our entrance. He was typing away aggressively on his computer.
“Go ahead Al.” Jess whispered, giving me a small shove forward.
I walked towards the man and the desk, hesitantly. The whole time I counted the steps from the door so I knew in my head how long it would take me to escape if I really chickened out.
