"Dinner's here!"
I heard the familiar call from the room at the end of the hall. Whenever that kid saw the food cart, he called out to the rest of us. It was nice, but not really necessary. The food cart came around at 8:30, 12:30, 3:30 and 6:30. It was never late.
I fiddled with the remote and moved my bed so I was sitting up. I knew it would be a few minutes until the food arrived. I was always served last because I often needed to be fed. Not exactly the best feeling, but I couldn't do anything about it.
"Hey sweetie" Nurse Genella said as she walked in with my tray.
"Hi."
Nurse Genella dragged the table around so it was in front of me. "So, I think there's someone coming to see you tomorrow." She said.
"Really?" I asked. I hadn't had a visitor for a good 5 days now.
"Yeah, I'm pretty sure" she said.
"Who is it?" I asked.
"Ah. That's for me to know and you to find out." Nurse Genella said, winking at me.
Our conversation had to end abruptly due to the fact that I needed to focus on eating the food. I ate a few bites until I stopped.
"I don't want any more" I said.
"You've barely eaten anything."
"I'm not hungry."
Nurse Genella put some more food on my spoon. "Come on, a bit more."
"I don't want to."
"I know you don't, but you have to." she said, holding the spoon up next to my mouth.
I sighed and took the spoonful. Nurse Genella grabbed some more and held it up.
"I ate the last bit...."
"I'm not satisfied with the amount of food you've eaten. 5 more and I'll be happy." Nurse Genella said.
"Please don't make me do this" I said.
"Open wide."
I reluctantly ate another three. I was feeling pretty sick.
"Alright, 2 more, and we're done here."
"I'm going to throw up."
"What?"
I leaned over the blankets and emptied my stomach onto them. Nurse Genella sighed and pulled the top blanket off, folding it around my puke.
"I'm sorry" I croaked.
"It's alright. If you're going to be sick, just warn me a little first." Nurse Genella said. We were both used to my constant puking. It was a side effect of this stupid medication.
Nurse Genella grabbed me a clean blanket and tucked me in slightly. I wiped my mouth and took a deep breath.
"Is something wrong honey?"
"Everything's wrong" I said, bursting into tears. I hadn't cried since before my parents died. I was just numb during those moments. It was just then that it hit me that they were gone. And thus I couldn't hold in my tears.
"Oh sweetie," Nurse Genella said, gently rubbing my back.
"I can't do this" I sobbed.
"Yes you can. I know you can." Nurse Genella said soothingly.
I cried a little longer. Nurse Genella sat on the end of my bed and put her arm around me. It was slightly comforting. She gently rubbed my shoulder.
"Hey, Genella, we've got other wards to get to" another nurse said, poking her head in the door. However her expression changed when she saw me crying my eyes out.
"I'll catch up. I think this one needs me here for a little while." Nurse Genella said.
The other nurse nodded and went back to the cart. I heaved myself up. "You can go now." I said.
"Honey, it's okay, I'm here for you, I don't have to leave just yet."
I wiped my eyes. "I'm good now, I promise." I said.
Nurse Genella looked at me for a moment. "You know which button to push if you need me."
I nodded and she got up from her seat, grabbing my tray of food. She started walking towards the door.
"Nurse Genella?"
"Yeah sweetie?"
"Can you turn the light out?"
She smiled weakly and flipped the switch. "Sweet dreams Coop, I'll see you in the morning."
I rolled over and looked out the window at the night sky. The stars were incredibly vivid. And the moon was full. It was all so beautiful. I wanted nothing more than to be able to stand up and go outside to see it.
But alas, that wasn't going to happen.
