I could hear Uncle Randy and Nurse Genella arguing outside my hospital room door.

"She shouldn't be going on this trip! She's not well enough!" Uncle Randy exclaimed.

"She is well enough. She's spent months in here under watch, and nothing has happened. You don't know how much is going into this. We've got preparations beyond anything we've done before." Nurse Genella said back.

"Exactly! She's spent months doing nothing! As soon as she gets up, the chances increase!" Uncle Randy said.

Nurse Genella sighed. "The poor kid's just lost her family, Randall. These 2 guys are the only thing I've seen that makes her smile. This is a dream of hers. She's already been diagnosed with depression."

Wait, WHAT? I didn't know this...

"She needs this. She needs to be able to get out of here. She never smiles, Randall. She knows that it's only a matter of time. She needs something that makes her smile. And at the moment, that's these 2 men. An extraordinary amount of planning has gone into this. She's not allowed out of their sight, and the doctors are on speed dial. She's going to be okay, Randall. I think this trip will make her okay in the long run as well."

There was a moment of silence from Uncle Randy.

"I understand. I'm just...worried you know? I don't want her in any danger. I've lost the rest of my family. She's all I've got left. I just...she can't die on me. She just can't." Randall said. I heard him let out a muffled sob.

"Randall, she'll be fine."

"I'm trying to make her life longer."

"Yeah, I know that. But making it miserable is not going to do that."

"I'm not trying to make her miserable."

"Yeah, I know. But you need to loosen the reins. She's 14, Randall. She can't spend that time cooped up in hospital rooms for the entire time."

"I understand. But she's still coming with me for the break, right?"

"Uhh..."

"What?"

"She doesn't exactly want to come with you."

"Why not?!"

"She doesn't know you Randall. Maybe just take her out for a day at a time. Just give her some time to warm up to you. She feels like you're a stranger."

"She has made that abundantly clear."

"Yeah. Maybe next week, you can just take her out for lunch or something. Talk about your lives. Catch up. I think that's what you both need."

"Yeah, okay, I think I'll talk to the doctors..." Uncle Randy said.

"Okay. See you later Randall."

There was the sound of footsteps and I knew they were gone. That left me with time to think. I wasn't depressed, was I? I mean, sure I had a lot of bad days, but wouldn't anyone in my situation?

I sighed to myself and pulled the blanket up over my shoulder. Time to catch up on that nap I was enjoying.

*****Rhett's Point of View*****

"Alright, so, you ready to get started?" The doctor asked.

I looked over at Link, who was nodding. "Yeah, let's do it." I said.

"Okay...so, next Saturday, you're taking Cooper..."

"Just to my house" Link said. "We're not doing anything fancy."

"Oh, good. That's good." The doctor said, writing something down. "Is it alright if I have your address?"

We both had to give the doctor several ways to contact us, the addresses of anywhere we might be...it was crazy! He gave us his number and we saved it as a top contact in case anything went wrong.

We talked for an hour or so. Just talking about her condition and what she could and couldn't do. No lifting anything heavy. No running. She wasn't in very good physical condition. But we both understood. I mean, she was sick.

"I'm really glad you guys are doing this. It's going to be really good for her." The doctor told us at the end.

"We're happy to make a difference" I said proudly.

"Yeah. That." Link said, stealing my thunder.

"Awesome guys. I guess I'll see you next Saturday." The doctor said.

"See you then."
