Chapter 73 - Home

Cooper fell asleep in the car ride home from the hospital.

She hadn't gotten to come home straight away, not at all. They had to make sure she was at her very best before we were allowed to take her home. It ended up being a month before she was allowed to come.

She was still incredibly ill, and it was so hard to watch as she relied so heavily on her crutches as we went out to the car. She fell asleep almost instantly once I started driving, much to Shepherd's dismay.

"Dad! She fell asleep!"

"I know bud. Just let her sleep. She's tired and sick."

"She's always tired and sick!"

"I know..." I sighed.

Cooper woke up with a bit of a snort, before looking around. "W-Where am I?"

"You're in the car, we're going home." I explained slowly.

"Oh... right..."

Shepherd grinned and nodded.

We got home and I helped her inside, mostly because she was almost too weak to rely on the crutches. I tried to take her to bed, but she told me that she just wanted to sit with Shepherd and Locke to watch TV on the couch.

She didn't last long. SHe fell asleep about 4 minutes into the show. I carried her to bed and tucked her in, before sighing and going out to Jessie.

"This isn't going to be easy, Rhett. We both knew that when it was pitched to us."

"I know, it's just... it's hard." I sighed. "It's sucking the life out of her and I can't... I can't do this."

"She needs you."

I ran a hand through my hair and nodded. "I'll do my best, Jess."

She smiled. "Good. Now you can cook dinner while I go sort her medication."

I rolled my eyes playfully and began cooking dinner. When it was ready, Jessie brought her out to the table to sit with us. She was still remarkably sleepy, but able to talk to Shep about how he was going with his schoolwork, so it was okay.

When dinner was over, she just went straight back to bed after vomiting up everything she'd eaten.

It was clear these next few months were going to be quite a challenge.
