"Happy Sunday Coop!"
I smiled slightly at Nurse Genella's enthusiasm. Sunday morning's meant special breakfast. And from what I could see from the tray she was holding, today was pancakes.
"It smells good" I said honestly.
Nurse Genella smiled and sat down in the seat beside my bed. She fiddled with the bed and made me sit up. I could see more of the tray now. I even got some maple syrup. Mmmmmm. It had been so long since I had good pancakes.
"Someone's excited" Nurse Genella said, chuckling.
"Pancakes are my favourite. My Mom makes the best ones..."
There was a moment of silence.
"I'm sure these one's are pretty good." Nurse Genella said, beginning to cut them up.
"Okay" I said softly.
They were actually pretty good.
"Do you have any kids?" I asked Nurse Genella.
"I do actually. Why are you asking?"
"I realised I don't actually know anything about you."
"Well, I have a 2 year old daughter named Emma, a 4 year old son named Elvis and a 7 year old daughter named Isabella." Nurse Genella explained.
"So I'm old compared to your kids." I said.
"You're not old, sweetie."
"I'm 14."
"Exactly. Nowhere near old."
I shrugged and fiddled with my fingers.
"I think that visitor is coming this morning." Nurse Genella said.
"Who is it?"
"You'll find out."
I sighed. So much mystery. Nurse Genella gathered everything up. "I'll be back in an hour to take your vitals."
I nodded. "See you then."
And then there was silence. I rolled over to look out of the window. It was open, and the fresh air coming in was quite nice. I could hear birds chirping and if I moved my head just slightly, I could see children playing on the hospital playground.
These were the moments when all I could feel was the numbness. I didn't move, didn't smile. I just lay there and processed. I didn't notice the time passing.
"Are you Cooper Greene?"
I turned to face the door, where a woman was standing there.
"Yeah" I said softly.
The woman walked in and sat down on the chair beside my bed.
"My name is Joanne Walter. I'm from the bank."
"Is this to do with my parents?"
"Yeah honey, it is."
She seemed to have trouble looking at me. I understand why, I mean, I'm not a perfect example of 'healthy', but still. If you're coming with bad news, you need to be able to look at them in the eyes and tell them.
"You've been placed under the legal care of the state." the woman explained.
I nodded solemnly as I took it all in. In a normal case, my parents money would be looked after until I was 18, but now, because I was sick, they were putting half of it away and using the other half for my treatment because the state couldn't afford it, which I didn't think was fair, but anyway.
