"Ready to go Rhett?" I asked as I grabbed my bag.
"Uh...I am, but you're not." Rhett said unsurely.
I glanced over my appearance. Shirt? Check. Pants? Check. Shoes? Check.
"Doctor Andersson said 3 days rest, Super-Cooper." Rhett sighed.
"So I have to stay here?" I asked.
"I hate to disappoint you, but yes." Rhett sighed.
I sighed and dropped my backpack next to my feet. I must have looked pretty miserable, because Rhett pulled me into a hug and rested his beared chin on top of my head.
"I'm coming home around lunch to pick you up and take you to the appointment. I'll tell you what, depending on what the doctor says, we might be able to drop in for a while after." Rhett told me.
"Oh, okay." I shrugged.
"Good. I'll see you this afternoon Cooper." Rhett smiled. Something was tugging at his lips though, I could tell. But he turned around and headed for the door before he could let it out.
"Morning hon!" Jessie chirped from behind me.
"Oh, morning." I said awkwardly, taking a few steps away from the counter so Jessie could get to the bench.
"Did you see Rhett before he left?"
"Yeah, he said he was going to come home around lunch to take me to the appointment with Doctor Anderson."
"Oh, awesome. Do you want some breakfast? I'm afraid it's just cereal this morning."
"That sounds amazing." I smiled. Jessie smiled back. She was so desperate for me to enjoy myself here. I liked the gesture, but it had been almost a week, so it was kind of unnecessary now. I had settled in okay.
I made myself a bowl and sat down at the table. Locke and Shepherd both walked out and had some too. Shep had a conversation with me, but Locke was still being a stranger. I guess he was still sharing Lily's views on me. Whatever. Haters gonna hate.
Jessie gave me the TV remote and wouldn't let me do anything else, really. Locke and Shepherd sat around the table with Jessie as they did their homeschooling.
"Why doesn't Cooper have to do her school?" Shepherd whined.
"Because she's sick." Jessie said gently. "Now back to math..."
"I wanna be sick too!" Shep exclaimed.
I heard Jessie gasp. "No, no, you don't pumpkin, you really don't."
"But it means I get to watch TV all day!" Shep whined.
It hurt a little. I wouldn't wish this on even my worst enemies. And I know that Shepherd was too young to understand, but if he just knew HALF the things I had been through, I'm pretty sure he'd never say anything like that ever again. Plus, I'd prefer to be in school with all my old friends than be sitting on the couch here.
I clicked the TV off and went back to the family in the kitchen.
"Need any help?" I asked Jessie.
"Oh, Cooper, I don't expect you to-"
I cut her off. "I've only been out of school for 6 months or so. I should be able to help with 2nd grade maths."
Jessie smiled. "Alrighty-then. Shep, listen to Cooper, she'll help you, okay?"
I helped Jessie with her teaching for the rest of the morning. It was actually a lot of fun. Shep was a pretty good student.
Lunch rolled around and after a sandwich, Rhett took me to the hospital. Luck for me, this time we just went to a small office on a strange wing that I'd never been in before.
