I woke up before the sun the next morning. That was probably due to the fact that I urgently reached for a sick bag and threw up into it. Ahh, the wonderful effects of chemo.
My stomach swirled and I curled up tightly, making 'uhg' sounds. I was feeling pretty awful. I found the remote and called for a nurse.
The nurse came in and took my bag of sick away. I lay groaning for the next few hours. I was in a lot of pain, and I couldn't do anything about it.
Finally, breakfast came around. I wasn't hungry at all. Nurse Genella brought me in a bowl of cereal and a slice of toast.
"I don't want any breakfast."
"I know you don't. But you have to."
"Please. I really don't."
"Do you want the feeding tube again?"
That shut me up. The feeding tube is not pleasant. I ate the minimum amount that Nurse Genella would let me.
And then I threw it straight up.
"Oh sweetie. There it is. Good girl. Let it all out."
The running commentary did not make it better. I finished tossing my cookies and I tied the bag off. Nurse Genella took it away. I would feel like this for the rest of the week, and into next week as well. The thought of it just made me feel awful.
Nurse Genella came back with a cup of water, which I took a few sips from.
"Better?"
I shrugged. "Not really."
Nurse Genella sighed. "Last night you said something about the wish."
"Oh, right!" I said. "Do you have a pen?"
Nurse Genella reluctantly grabbed her pen and held it out to me. "Are you sure you don't want me to write it?"
"Nope, I can do it." I said, attempting to hold the pen correctly in my useless hands. Nurse Genella moved the table around and put the card in front of me. My hand trembled.
Using the best of my ability, I wrote the first few words. They were barely recognisable. I sighed. I used to love handwriting things. Not any more, it seemed.
Nurse Genella noticed my frustration. "Do you need some help?"
"No, I've got it." I said, writing the next word. I finished the sentence and sighed. It looked awful.
"Can you decode it underneath so other people can read it?" I asked.
"Sure sweetie." Nurse Genella said, writing it in neat, curly writing. I remember when my writing used to look like that.
I packed the card into the envelope and handed it to Nurse Genella. She smiled and put it in her pocket. "I'll take it down to their drop off box now." She said.
I nodded and leaned back on the pillows. I was really tired all of a sudden. This stupid medication. It didn't take me long to drift off.
*****Link's Point of View*****
I felt my phone buzzing in my pocket. I pulled it out and looked at the caller ID.
"Hey Rhett, it's Adam." I said.
Rhett looked over from beside me. "From Make-A-Wish?"
"Yeah."
"Well answer it!"
I swiped my finger across the screen and put it on finger. "Hey Adam, what's up?"
"Hey Link! Is Rhett there too?"
"I'm right here" Rhett said.
"Oh great, I got both of you. I have news."
"Yeah?" I asked nervously.
"You've been wished for again."
"Oh, cool" I said.
"Yeah. 14-year old Cooper Greene." Adam said.
"What do you want us to do?" Rhett asked.
"I was wondering if you could come down to our headquarters tomorrow to talk about it." Adam asked.
"Uh, sure, I guess. What time?" I asked. This was the first time we had ever been asked to go down to discuss it before. This seemed a little more complicated than our last make-a-wishes.
"Is 2 okay with you guys?"
I looked at Rhett, who shrugged. "Yeah, sounds great. See you then."
I hung up the phone after we said bye. I looked at Rhett. "We were wished for again." I said.
"It's kinda awesome, don't you think?" Rhett said.
"Yeah, I mean, it's amazing. We're somebody's last wish. That's...incredible." I said.
Rhett nodded in agreement. "I guess we'll find out more about it tomorrow" He said.
I nodded and looked back at my computer screen. It was already 5:30. We were heading home soon.
We worked a little longer, before getting in the car to head home. I dropped Rhett off, before heading back to my family.
"I'm home!" I called out to my children.
I walked through the house and hugged all my kids. They were happy to see me. I kissed my wife, who was cooking dinner. My family never failed to bring a smile to my face.
"Dinner's ready kids!" Christy called. Lily, Lincoln and Lando came running in and took their seats. We all sat down and started eating, talking about our days.
"How was your day Dad?" Lincoln asked.
"Oh, it was good."
"Anything exciting happen?"
"Well, I got a phone call today. Rhett and I are doing another Make A Wish."
"That's so great!" Christy said, leaning over and kissing my cheek. I chuckled.
"Yeah, I'm excited. We're going to learn more about it tomorrow." I said.
"Sweet!" Lincoln said.
I got back to dinner and smiled. My family were the best.
