"So, where are we going?" I asked.
"Your place."
"What?!" My voice came out as a shriek.
Rhett pulled into an all-too-familiar driveway. "This is your house, correct?"
I gave a horrified nod. I didn't want to be here. Not at all.
Link looked at me. "We were just told to take you here so you could grab some things."
I grimaced and nodded. "Do you have a key?"
Link pushed the metal object into my palm. "Yeah, here it is."
I nodded silently. "Let's go in."
I climbed out of the car and Rhett and Link followed me to the door.I did not want to do this. Not at all. My hands were shaking terribly.
"Do you need help?"
"No" I snapped. I sighed. "Sorry, just, this is..."
"It's okay."
I heard the familiar click of the lock as I turned the key. The hinges squeaked as I pushed the door open. My legs started trembling as I saw the furniture. Well, I saw the sheets covering the furniture.
Rhett walked over and took my hand, which was sort of comforting. I took a few steps into the hallway. Link shuffled behind us.
I glanced at the wall of pictures on the wall in the family room. Link walked over to it, glancing at the pictures.
"So this is your family..."
"Yeah. Was." I stammered. I was just so overwhelmed to be back here without them. Rhett noticed how badly I was shaking.
"Do you need to sit down?" he asked.
"Yeah, yeah I think I do."
Rhett helped me over to the couch while Link pulled the dusty sheet off so I could sit down. Right in my Mom's spot. Tears started to pool in my eyes and I didn't know what to do.
"It's okay Coop." Rhett said, patting my shoulder.
"No. It's not." I cried.
Rhett didn't have a response for that. He awkwardly patted my back as I wept uncontrollably on the couch. I cried for my family. For that fact that they were supposed to outlive ME, not the other way around. I was supposed to be the dead one.
"I-I'm so alone" I wept.
Rhett and Link wrapped me in a hug. "You're not alone in this Coop, we're here for you." Rhett said unsurely. But he knew that it didn't compare. Nothing compared to the tender love and care of your parents. The games you played with your siblings. Just the little details that made all the difference.
I wiped my eyes a little. "Thanks for trying guys."
"I'm sorry for bringing you. If I had known it would make you this upset, I wouldn't have agreed to bring you here." Rhett said.
I brought my legs up and curled up in a ball. "It's okay. You didn't know. And it would've happened sooner or later."
"So, where's the stuff we've got to grab?" Link asked. I cocked my head towards the staircase. "I think they just want me to grab some clothes and some personal stuff."
"Alright. Are you ready to head up?"
I shrugged. "No, but I don't have a choice, do I?"
Link took my hand, and Rhett took my other one as we walked up the steps to the top. I could see the familiar doors on the corridor.
