Chapter 62 - Coming Clean

"Lies?" Ruben seemed confused. "What kind of lies?"

I wiped my nose. "M-My parents aren't t-travelling. Rhett isn't my Uncle. I'm not homeschooled. I didn't stay in Vegas longer for Rhett's work. I d-didn't have family s-stuff when I d-disappeared for a week."

"What?" Ruben took a step back. "Who are you?!"

"M-My name is C-Cooper G-Greene." I whispered.

"What about your age?! Did you lie about that too?!"

I started crying again. "N-No! E-Everything e-else, that was t-the real me!"

Ruben was pacing around his bedroom. "How do I know that?!"

"J-Just l-listen!" I pleaded.

He glared at me, but folded his arms and looked at me.

"M-My p-parents and my s-sister died... about 4 m-months ago... in a c-car crash on the h-highway."

"Huh?"

I pulled my phone out and found the article on it, before handing it over. "T-They were o-on their w-way to v-visit me."

"Why would they be visiting you?"

"I w-was in the h-hospital..."

"The apendix thing?"

I shook my head tearfully. "R-Ruben... d-do you know w-who Rhett and L-Link are?"

He shook his head.

I found their YouTube channel and passed it back.

"So they're famous..."

"Y-Yeah..."

"Then how come... what?" He just seemed confused.

"I-I have..." I choked on my words. "I-I-"

"What?"

"I m-met them through the M-Make a wish foundation" I whispered.

It took him a moment to realise, before he leapt back in alarm. "Y-You have..."

"C-Cancer." I breathed. "S-Stage 4. Terminal. B-Brain."

He was silent. I started crying again.

"Cooper... why didn't you tell me?"

"I-I just w-wanted a friend!" I cried. "N-None of my o-other friends s-stayed when they found o-out! I j-just didn't want t-to be a-alone!"

"Did you really think I'd be that shallow?"

"I d-didn't know y-you at t-the time!"

Ruben was silent. "Those times you disappeared, you were in the hospital, weren't you?"

I nodded tearfully. "I-I'm m-meant to be o-on a break f-from treatment... R-Rhett and L-Link offered t-to take me because m-my family i-is..."

He rubbed my back. "Shh. Shh. It's okay. Don't worry."

"I-I'm s-sorry Ruben!" I cried. "I-I didn't know h-how to t-tell you!"

"I-I think I need some time to think Coops..." He breathed.

I didn't need to hear more. I left his room, ran past his mother, grabbed my board and just ran back to Mythical Entertainment. Link hugged me tightly, he didn't even need to ask what had happened.

Because now Ruben knew.

And now I was just left to wonder if he'd ever want to see me again.
