"Come on, honey, let's go get your halloween costume on," I smiled at my little girl, her hand in mine as we made our way up the stairs.

"Is daddy coming trick-or-treating with us?" Her small voice piped up as I took a glance at Shawn, his tired body sprawled out across the leather couch, his chest rising and falling slowly as he slept peacefully.

"Not this year, baby. Daddy just got home from singing all over the country last night, we have to give him a break. He's tired," I sighed, reasoning with her. She simply nodded her head a few times, clearly disappointed.

"But he said he was gonna be Prince Charming," her bottom lip quivered ever so slightly, "and that we were gonna get candy together today."

"Don't worry, he'll take you next year," I nodded, giving her hand a gentle squeeze.

"You said that last time," she pouted, her soft, brown eyes, which reminded me so much of Shawn's, stared up into mine.

I didn't have an answer. Instead, I gently nodded towards the staircase, continuing up towards her bedroom. The pink color splashed across the walls, picture frames, and stuffed animals and dolls lining the dresser lifted my mood a bit.

There was a comfortable silence between us, only soft snores from downstairs were audible from where we were. I grabbed the princess costume hanging on her closet rod, bringing it towards her.

Slipping off her pajamas, I dressed her in the baby blue material, the ruffled sleeves and shimmery tulle making her smile despite the sadness buried in her little brown eyes.

"Why is daddy never home?" She suddenly questioned, her boldness immediately making my hands stop moving, my eyes slowly drifting up to meet hers as I knelt down on the carpet in front of her.

"Daddy has a hard job, hun, and sometimes hard jobs require people to leave home for a while," my lips formed a thin line, my eyes watering at the thought of Shawn leaving again in a few months for the next tour.

I continued to get her ready, pulling her golden blonde hair up into a slicked back bun at the top of her hair, as she wished to dress as Cinderella this year.

"What's daddy's job?" She cocked her head to the side, her voice still quiet, her fingertips playing with the hem of her princess costume.

"Making people happy," I smiled slightly, handing her the wand to go along with the costume.

"Well then why am I not happy?"

I didn't know how to respond, the question breaking my heart. I heard soft footsteps down the hall, and I knew Shawn had been listening to our conversation.

"Oh no," I mumbled, glancing back at the doorframe, my heart falling heavy at the sound of soft sniffles from my own bedroom.

"I'll be right back. Just go get the shoes from the closet floor and put those on, and I'll be back to take you out, okay?" I kissed the top of her forehead, before heading into my bedroom.

"Shawn," I sighed, the sight of my husband on the edge of our bed, his head in his hands, tore my heart to pieces, "please don't cry, baby."

"I-I can't even make my own daughter happy!" He looked up at me, the dark bags under his eyes were prominent tonight, and tears poured down his face.

"Shh, don't cry, baby, she's only six, she doesn't understand your job situation yet," I took his hands in mine, planting a small kiss on his cheek.

He took a deep breath, before pulling his hands away from mine to wipe his stream of tears away.

"You just sit here and take it easy, I'll take her out tonight, and when we get back, she'll have her candy, and she'll be fine, alright?" I ran my fingers through his disheveled hair, trailing my finger tips to his cheek and down his jaw.

I took one deep breath before standing up and making my way back into my daughter's bedroom. She was seated on a chair, her feet dangling back and forth.

"Are you ready, baby girl?" I smiled slightly as she slowly nodded her head, gently playing with her plastic pearl necklace.

"Wait," I heard a deep voice from behind me, both of our eyes darting towards the door.

There stood Shawn, and just as he had promised, tonight he was certainly Prince Charming. His pale blue costume fit perfectly and even the small, gold crown laying on top of his messy mop of brown hair, made our daughter smile.

"You almost forgot your tiara, my princess," he walked towards her, picking up the bejeweled, plastic tiara resting on her dresser, and gently placing it in her hair. His hands trailed down to her cheeks, gently cupping them in his large hands.

"Daddy!" She grabbed his wrists excitedly, her toothy grin showing just how happy she was to see her father keep his year-long promise.

"Are you ready to go, my darling? You only have until midnight, anyways," he chuckled, quickly scooping her up, carrying her in his arms, and planting a kiss on her forehead as she giggled.

"Yes, yes, let's go!" She squealed with joy, fixing his crown slightly before wrapping her arms tightly around his neck.

I handed her a small pumpkin shaped bucket, smiling at the both of them, "Don't lose your slipper out there, Cinderella."
