Clair's POV

I was sad.
I mean, most people think I'm sad a lot, but that is only because I'm quiet. You see, there is a difference between timidness and sadness.

"Can I please take care of the Air medallion? Pretty please?"
"Ok fine, Sonic," Amy said, waving it in front of his face. "Calm yourself."
"Yay!" Sonic grabbed the amulet and hugged it tightly.

It had only been a few hours since we arrived back at Tails' workshop. Sonic had a cast on his ankle, which we had discovered was broken from his adventure with Piper.
Piper hadn't said a word since we got back, which was odd for her. She just sat on the couch, staring off at nothing in particular. She was probably upset at herself by making Tails angry. I felt bad for her. I knew how she felt.

I stared at Shadow, who had his eyes closed. He stood quietly in the corner, just like usual. His stoic nature and heartless attitude made my heart flutter. I blushed and looked away, sadness filling my heart once more.
Why was he being colder than the norm?
Why did my words affect him so?
I just couldn't believe that I made him so angry with just a few simple words. Now he won't even talk to me.

"I can't believe we have five of the seven!" Knuckles said, fist bumping the air.  "Now all we need is the Light and Dark Medallions!"
"I know!" Sonic said joyfully. "Egg man can't beat us now!"
Shadow suddenly flinched. He opened his ruby eyes and slipped away to another room. But why?
I suddenly fought the urge to follow him. Maybe I could talk to him alone and find out why he was acting the way he was to me.

When no one was looking, I slipped away to follow the dark hedgehog.
I carefully trodden down the halls of the workshop, casually avoiding the creaky floorboards I had grown accustomed to. I peaked my head in the rooms, checking for anyone inside. No one was there.
After checking the empty rooms, I moved on to outside the workshop.
There, on the bench by the garage, sat Shadow with his head in his hands.
He looked stressed. His quills stood upright as he rubbed his temples. The wind blew softly threw them, making my stomach churn.
Should I go up to him?
Would I dare?
I would.
I slowly made my way to Shadow and softly tapped his shoulder.
The motion made him jump, and his automatic reflexes took over.
I gasped as he swift-fully whirled around and twisted my arm backwards. I yipped in fright as he growled and tripped me. He was soon on top of me, pushing my face into the wet earth.
"S-Shadow!" I gasped.
He suddenly realized who had snuck up behind him and gasped. He released me and jumped off of me.
"Forgive me, Clair," he growled.  "You cannot just sneak up on me like that!" He huffed. "I have been trained to act when threatened.."
My eyes were wide with fright. "I-I'm sorry."
"What are you doing out here anyway?" His gaze grew angry. "Were you spying on me??"
I gasped. "Oh no! I was just wondering if you were ok-"
"I am positively fine." He retorted crudely. "Now if you will excuse me." Shadow suddenly whirled around and walked past me, heading back inside.
I stood there in silence, hurt and surprised. Why me??
Suddenly anger rose out of me. I grabbed him arm and twirled around.
"WHAT IS YOUR PROBLEM??" I growled, surprised at myself. "COULD YOU JUST TELL ME WHAT IS THE BIG DEAL?"
He stood there, clearly shocked at my outburst. Then he grew stoic again, but hurt evident in his eyes. "My problem.. MY PROBLEM??" He gasped. "MY PROBLEM IS NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS, CLAIR."
Tears welled in my eyes. "Clearly, by the way you have been acting whenever I am in your presence." His face grew pained when I started to cry.
"Just tell me why you act like this around me. What did I do wrong?"
He looked at the ground. "You did nothing Clair." He stared at me. "It is best if you not engage yourself with me."

"It would be best for the both of us."

He took my hand from his arm, and I realized I had been freezing him that whole time. He was in physical pain from my touch, yet never showed it. The pain I had inflicted emotionally, however, was shown in his eyes.
Shadow ran inside, leaving me alone in the wind, utterly destroyed.🌟
