Countdown- 3 days
Pipers POV

All was silent in Tails' workshop.
I couldn't sleep. How could I? The voice was only growing in strength. The vortex grew stronger dream after dream.
I know it seemed silly, but not waking up was one of my biggest fears from that dream.
The other.. Knowing why I was destined for greatness. And the price that tags along with it.
Blaze's warning flew in my head.

Be warned, Piper. You are destined for something great, but greatness comes with a price.

Someone from the past is trying to contact you.

It's Enerjak, Piper. He is after you.

I shivered in my pajamas as I looked at the clock. 3:14 am.
I sighed. I have got to try and sleep. I can't go on forever. I'll just set an alarm so I wake up.
I reached over for my communicator to set an alarm, but it was gone from its usual spot on the nightstand.
Huh. That's weird. Where is it?

Suddenly I remembered. It was still wired funny from the Avalanche. Tails was fixing it on his desk.
I'll go grab it quickly, and then I'll go to bed.

I gulped at the thought of sleep.

Slowly, I slipped out from my blanket and placed my feet on the cold floor of my room. Carefully avoiding the creaky floorboards, I tip toes down the hall and into the main work area of the workshop.
In the center held a couch. Although worn, it was comfy. It held a sentimental value to all of us; all of us at least one time woke up on it with our body bandaged up.
Across from the maroon couch was an old tv, playing static. Sonic forgot to flip it off.
I noticed his sleeping form still on the couch. Sonic snored softly. I stifled a giggle, and inched closer to the desk.
In the far back held Tails' plane, the Tornado. It holds a special place in Tails' heart. I smiled.
Then, in any other open spaces, lined walls upon walls of shelved books and organized mechanical parts. Some broken machines lie on the ground, and others were piled on desks. The one open desk held the Albion Prophesies and the Elemental Medallions book, and right along side it was my wristwatch communicator, completely fixed.
Thanks, Tails.
I slowly slipped it on and inched my way back to the hallway when I heard movement behind me.
I slowly turned around, hoping I didn't wake up the sleeping form of Sonic.
It was quite the opposite.
The noisemaker was none other than Shadow the Hedgehog.
He moved quietly, not noticing me. He inched over to Sonic and took something from his hand.
The Air Medallion.
"S-Shadow?" I whispered, trying to not wake up the blue blur. I didn't want to bring attention to the situation. I really wanted to be wrong about what I thought was happening.
His ears perked up and his ruby eyes glistened in the dark. He looked surprised, and then his stoic nature took an unexpected turn.
"Piper, I really hoped I wouldn't have to do this.." He said, voice pained. He slipped the medallion in a bag with the others he had stolen.
He took all of the medallions.
"Why, Shadow?" I asked, confusion and fear biting at my nerves.
He looked away. Then he spoke.
"Eggman. I had too. I'm sorry, Piper, but I can't let you ruin this for me."
"Ruin what, Shadow?!" I asked, louder.
"Please, Piper. You have to understand. It was not my choice."
Hot tears started to flow.
"I knew it." I whispered softly, scolding myself. "I knew you were bad news, Shad. I told myself, over and over. I guess I just didn't want to believe it."
His face grew distorted in anguish of himself.
"I guess I just wanted to believe you were good, Shadow."
He slowly raised his hand at me. "Please, Piper. Just know that I'm sorry. I had to do this. I have to know what Maria left behind."
Maria.
I remember Tails telling me about her.
She was Eggman's niece. She was so sweet and kind, but never got to see earth. She lived on the ARK, a space station, with Shadow and Eggy. She and Shad were close. And one day, people came and shot her. Shadow couldn't save her.

I blinked back hot tears, my face pleading.
"Please, Shadow. You don't have to do this. Please."

He dropped his head.
"Chaos SPEAR."

A green lightning bolt shot out from his raised hand and knocked into my stomach. I flew back, hitting into one of the shelves. The books toppled onto me, and the bookcase followed.
I screamed in pain as I was crushed by the books and shelves.
Then everything faded away. I cringed one last time to hear Shadow's breath staggering as he muttered one last phrase.

"Chaos CONTROL."
And with that, I fell into the bright blinding light of my worst nightmare.
And because I was out cold from the lost sleep and pain, I couldn't wake up.

It was time. 🌟
