Tris POV

The next day

I wake up to hard rain. I'm currently staying at Tobias' house, I went back last night and got a beating, but he brought me back to his house and cleaned me up. It's now 2 in the morning, and is pouring. Lightning illuminates the room and thunder booms.

Flashback

Nerves fill my body as we drive to my singing competition. Thunder booms above the car, rain trickles down the windows quickly. The car is silent except for the noise from the storms and the occasional complaining of my mother in the front seat.

As lightning flashes overhead, I go over my songs quietly in my head.

Heart. Beats. Fast. Colors and promises.

How to be brave.

How am I to love when I'm afraid.

To. Fall-

Suddenly, "Andrew watch out!"
The car plummets into the air as a car collides into ours, trying to avoid a fallen tree. We flip 4 times before landing in the grass, on the cars side. The seatbelt digs into my arm and neck, while glass shatters outside.

We are able to climb out and I see my Dad is unconscious, with a large bump on his head from hitting the steering wheel.

As I hear ambulances come, I feel myself slipping away into darkness. Before I completely pass out, I hear my mother say, "THIS IS ALL YOU'RE FAULT, BEATRICE!"

It's true, it was my singing competition we were going to. If we didn't go, this wouldn't have happened.

It was the last thing I heard before passing out, and at 13, I believed it.

Flashback over

I feel myself trembling under the covers as more thunder booms, and more lighting provides light into the room.

I still have the mark on my arm and neck. By instinct, I hold that arm.

"Tris? Are you awake?" I hear Tobias say. I pull the covers away from my head and I see him looking down at me. "Hey, you okay?" He asks. I sit up and he quickly realizes I'm shaking. He pulls me onto his lap, and holds me. I put my face on his chest, still holding the arm where I have the seat belt marks.

"What's wrong?" He asks softly into my ear. With hesitation, I explain the story.

"It wasn't your fault," he says. "Something bad always happens with storms now," I explain shakily. "But you're fine now. Nothing is going to hurt you with me here," Tobias says gently. He looks at my scared upper arm and rubs a hand over it, as well as my neck. "You're fine," he whispers. I bury my head into his chest again, with it still storming.

I see the trees swaying outside, the world blurred by wind and rain. He sees me looking outside with a look of discomfort on my face, so he gets up, draws the curtains, and closes the blinds.

After about 30 minutes of this, both of our phones go off. We look at them,

Tornado Warning

Shoot. He brings me in his arms tighter, as if protecting me from everything outside. The warning sirens in the neighborhood sound, waking up anyone that could have slept through the storm.

"Come on," he says, and gets up, pulling out a box under the bed and grabs my arm to lead me downstairs to the basement.
