Tris' POV
I watch from a distance as Dad enters the battle field. He turns to wave at me, and I go to run to him; to tell him to stay. My feet won't move; they are glued to the dirt.
Dad turns to the field and gets into the fighting position as loads of armed men fight each other back and forth. Some men begin to step out of line, Dad included.
A man on the opposing side grabs him and holds the black gun to his temple. I try to scream. I try to move. I can't.
Dad studies the man for a moment, before looking at me, then turning back to him. "Do as you must," his brave voice speaks.
The man's fingers curl around the trigger of the deathly gun.
BANG
I wake up with a start. Tears and sweat combine together as I gently remove myself from the arms of a sleeping Tobias. I walk out to the porch and sit, just watching the sun begin to rise. My body attempts to relax, but it cannot be done. It's 4:30.
With my hands still shaking at a rapid pace, I go inside to take sleeping pills I brought.
According to the directions, I am only supposed to take 1. Disbelieving the bottle, I take 4.
Putting myself back onto the porch, I feel myself growing tired quickly. My eyes begin to close, and my body relaxes.
****
"Tris. Tris, wake up." My body is being gently shaken. I groan as I feel my body aching and my tired eyes wanting to close. "Tris," I hear Tobias repeat softly. I open my eyes and see Tobias standing over me with a concerned expression plastered across his face. I realize I am in a chair, on the porch still.
"I woke up this morning and you were gone. I started looking everywhere but I couldn't find you. Then I saw you out here. I don't mean to be pushy, but, are you alright?" He rambles. I nod, and try to reposition myself. The world tilts before me. I grab something, anything, to keep me from tilting with it. That something just so happens to be Tobias.
His hands instantly find my waist, asking me what's wrong. "N-nothing. I-I just got n-nauseous," I say, biting back the urge to puke. "Are you sure?" He asks. I nod, but that makes me gag. I hold it down. "No, your not fine. Are you sick?" He asks. I shrug and take grab of his arm again as the world tilts.
"Alright, what made you like this? This isn't normal," he states, looking around. I shrug. "Did you take anything last night? Eat any weird food or have a weird drink?" I respond with a, "no." He thinks then adds, "Did you take any medicine?" I bite the inside of my cheek and fiddle with my hands.
"You did? What medicine?" He asks. Before I answer, I begin to feel faint. Tobias notices and picks me up and brings me to the bed.
He lays my head onto the silky pillow, and searches the room for clues of what I took. His eyes land onto my sleeping pill bottle, of which is still thrown out of my bag. Tobias picks it up and brings it to me.
"Did you take this?" He asks. "Yeah," I say quietly. I watch as he scans the symptoms. "Nausea is not one of the side effects. How many did you take?" He asks me, concerned. I bite the inside of my cheek. I know if I tell him he will get mad, but he doesn't understand!
"Tris, how many of these did you take?" He asks again, softly, as he sits on the edge of the bed. "Four," I say quietly. I wasn't even sure if he heard it, but he did. "You took four of these? Tris, you know you are only supposed to take one!" Tobias tells me, shocked, yet gentle. I don't meet his eyes as shame fills my body.
"Tris, why would you take four?" He asks me softly. I bite my lip before saying, "You don't understand! I'm always scared to go to sleep because of what might come! Last night was awful! I just wanted a dreamless sleep after that. I'm sorry," I say quietly.
"Tris, why didn't you just wake me? I could have helped you. I'll always be here," he says before running his fingers through my long hair. "I'm sorry, I just.... I feel like you always are the one to get me to stop crying, or screaming. I just wanted to give you a break and handle it by myself for once," my voice softly speaks.
He sighs. "Tris, please don't feel you need to do that. I'm here for you, always. You need to understand I don't mind calming you down. I want to be here for you, always."
Tobias' eyes scan mine before saying, "Let's get you some medicine, yeah?
