I took my only opportunity and kicked away the third dead walker, making it slightly easier for me to fight the other two. A few moments passed with Layla still shouting then the second walker dropped dead. I immediately pushed away that one too and managed to now properly fight the hideous rotter that was clawing away at my leather jacket.
I wasn't looking over to Layla anymore but I heard her stop screaming. She was either safe... Or dead. I pushed the final walker off me and rolled away, grabbing my crossbow. It lurked towards me with a grimacing snarl and I tried to load my crossbow. It was inches away, once again about to bite me when I again fell back, shut my eyes tight and pulled the trigger, hoping and praying luck was on my side. I daren't open my eyes for a second until I felt hands on my shoulders. I panicked and flinched but calmed slightly when I realized it was just Layla, smiling down at me. I wave of relief filled me and I sighed. As I sat up I then saw another person, standing a few feet behind Layla with a bloody pocket knife in their hand. Lacey.
I grabbed Layla and pulled her away, causing her to fall over. As she did so I grabbed my crossbow, loaded it again and aimed it. Lacey immediately slowly put her knife on the ground and kicked it over. How the hell was she not dead!? I watched her and Rob get swarmed before Layla and I reached the cavern! Lacey held her hands up in surrender to us but I still aimed my crossbow high.
"Daryl, put it down. She saved us." I heard Layla whisper to me from behind. I ignored her though and kept it aimed.
"Please, I saved your lives just let me speak." She whimpered pleadingly. I scowled at both women before huffing and slinging my crossbow over my shoulder. It was still dark so it was easy to hide the knife I had in my hand... Just in case.
"Have you got any other weapons or anything else on you?" Layla asked as she got up and made her way towards Lacey. Lacey shook her head. "Mind if I check?" Layla proposed. Lacey shrugged and nodded showing it was ok. Layla frisked her over then nodded to me. Guess she was telling the truth. "Sit." Layla said bluntly as she perched herself a few feet in front of me and then Lacey about a meter in front of her.
"So, what happened to Rob?" I spoke up and sat next to Layla.
"He got bit. We escaped but he got bit a bunch more times so I didn't. I stabbed his in the head before he turned, he asked me too. I've been alone since then." She informed us.
"Well you're welcome to sleep here the night with us," Offered Layla. I went to protest, I was not gonna sleep next to some random stranger, she could be dangerous! But Layla flashed me a glare, telling me not to say anything just with the look on her face like she already knew what I was gonna say. I scoffed and rolled my eyes.
"If you don't mind, please." Lacey smiled faintly.
"You mind taking first watch? I'm sorta tired," Layla asked turning to me slightly with pleading, tired eyes. I nodded reluctantly.
"I'll wake ya in an hour." I assured her. She smiled then turned onto her side and closed her eyes.
"Thankyou," Whispered Lacey before she too lay down and fell asleep like I was some kind of bloody guard watching over them.
