Chapter 46 : Inmates
[shortly before the prison attack]
Baylee's POV"These leaves right here. Get these." Hershel holds up a green leaf. We were collecting them to make tea for the sick.
The forest is peacefully quiet. The birds are chirping softly, and a gentle breeze blows through the trees.
The peace only lasts for a matter of minutes. A hear a loud smack, and then a thud. Michonne falls to the ground, unconscious.
I almost run forward to her, but then catch sight of the man towering behind the tree.
I drop all of the leaves in my hands. I start to back up. Fear spreads through my body, temporarily freezing me in place. I find myself desperately wishing I had a weapon.
Kadyn always told me that I needed a weapon. That I always needed some kind of self defense, because death catches people when they're not expecting it. And here I am, standing like a fool without a gun or knife.
The Governor steps forward, holding his gun out. He points the barrel at Hershel and I. He's going to kill me, just like he killed Steve. Rage clouds my mind, and it takes everything in me not to charge over to him and beat him to the ground (not that I could anyways).
I let out a small gasp of fear. Hershel raises his hands over his head, surrendering, although I can't bring myself to do the same. I'd rather be shot and killed than surrender at this evil man's gunpoint.
The Governor ties a rope around my wrists, and then Hershel's. He does the same with Michonne before slinging her over his shoulder. He forces us to walk through the forest, further and further away from the safety of the prison.
Soon, Michonne wakes up. The three of us are sitting inside some type of RV. I crane my neck to look out the window. The Governor isn't in here right now. Maybe if I can figure out where we are, we can escape.
But my thoughts of absconding are cut short by the Governor, who strides into the room arrogantly. He opens a cabinet and pulls out a small handful of bandages.
Then he turns to Michonne, and attempts to place a bandage on her forehead, which was bleeding from the cut where he hit her.
"Don't touch me." Michonne snarls, glaring at the man who doesn't even flinch.
"Stay still." The Governor replies calmly.
"Get off me." Michonne hisses.
The Governor backs away hastily, placing the remaining bandages on the counter.
I turn up my nose at him when he offers a plate of food. Knowing him, it was probably poisoned.
"You should eat. It's going to be a long day. No one is going to hurt you." The Governor speaks, placing the plate on the counter as well.
"I don't believe that." Hershel says, looking up at the man.
"Well, I don't care." The Governor replies haughtily.
"Just tell us what this is. Please." Hershel says.
"It isn't personal." The Governor answers. His words cause me to ball up my bound fists.
Memories of Steve flash through my mind. I can picture the Governor taking the group out and murdering them. I can almost hear the screams of terror; almost hear my brother's cries of pain.
"Then what is it?" Hershel asks in the calmest way possible.
"Michonne, I want you to know.. Penny, my daughter, she was dead. I know that now." The Governor says. "Now, I don't want to hurt you. I don't want to hurt anyone. I need the prison. That's it. There are people I need to keep alive. You three are going to help me take it. No one needs to die."
