Chapter 48: Still
Glenn's POVMy eyes blink open, and in that split second, everything is still. I'm lying on my back, staring up at the smoke filled sky, with a piercing ring in my ears that I can't shake away.
As I sit up from the concrete, the blurring colors and disoriented sounds start pivoting into clarity, and I find myself being pitched into fear.
Fear, because I am alone. Fear of the snarling corpses below, reaching up to the overhang I'm on. Fear of the smell of rotten flesh and thick smoke. The prison is dying.
I stand to my feet, wildly looking around, with only one thing on my mind.
"Kadyn?!"
The walkers snarl as I cling to the chain link surrounding the broken bridge. I furrow my eyebrows, trying to make sense of what has just happened. But instead of wasting time, I turn and make my way into the prison, praying that it's clear.
I rush through the corridors to cell block C, skidding to a halt at Kadyn and I's cell. I pull back the curtain and start grabbing my things. I pull out the prison riot gear from underneath the bed, and grab my orange backpack. I sit down on the bed, trying to clear my mind as I make sure everything is still in my bag.
My eyes land on the bedside table, gazing at the small photograph I had taken weeks ago. In the picture, my wife looked so calm. A little smile played on her lips. My heart throbs as I reach out and take the picture, staring at it for a moment. A sob catches in my throat. I don't know what I'm going to do.
I stand up from the bed and exit the cell several minutes later, determined to find Kadyn and the rest of the group.
I head up the flight of stairs to the perch, and load all of the necessities into my backpack. I continue around the cell block gathering all of the survival items, until the bag is full.
Then, with a final look around the cell block, I uneasily make my way to the door, knowing I'm about to be faced with hundreds of walkers.
I take a deep breath and push out of the door quickly, dashing into the courtyard. The corpses swarm around me, and if I didn't have the riot gear, I'd be deader than dead.
I kill a few of the walkers with my knife, and continue through the courtyard to the gates. But out of the corner of my eye, I see a girl sitting inside the generator fencing. She's not dead, so I make my way over to her and yank open the gate.
"Did you even fire a shot?" I ask, startling her. "All right, let's go. Let's go. Are you gonna stay here, huh? You're just gonna die?" The girl doesn't answer me, but looks up at me with sad, empty eyes.
"I was part of this." She sulks, hanging her head.
"I know." I reply, looking over my shoulder.
"So what are you doing?" The girl asks, looking back up at me with a confused expression.
"I need your help. We're gonna run out of bullets. Take this and take this." I hand her a bottle and the necessary items needed for my distraction plan.
"Back up," I tell her. I flick on the lighter and light the rag in the bottle, then hurl it at a nearby car. The plan succeeds, and the walkers are drawn to the new flame.
"All right, I need you to stay ahead of me, okay? I'll cover you, but I can't do it alone. Let's go." I push open the gate and we head through the courtyard quickly.
Luckily, we make it out of the courtyard and start heading for the road.
About fifteen minutes of complete silence walking down the road, I start to speak up to the new girl.
"Did you see if any of my people got out?" I ask, looking at her desperately.
"All I saw was my sister in that field. She wasn't supposed to be there. She had a gun, but they just swarmed her. She wasn't supposed to be there. I did it for him. I trusted him. And then he just killed that old man." The girl rambles, shaking her head.
"Hershel?" I ask, stopping in my tracks. "Was his name Hershel?"
"I'm sorry. I'm so sorry." The girl turns to look at me sadly. "Brian, that man, told us you were bad people. I know it's not true. I can see it's not, so what we did, what I did.. I mean, I'm a piece of shit. Why would you want my help?"
"I don't want it, I need it. I have to find Kadyn." My voice cracks as I finish my sentence.
"Who's Kadyn?" The girl asks helplessly.
"She's my wife."
"You guys got separated?" The girl asks and I nod.
"I was on the bus and then I got off to help and she didn't see me."
"How do you know if she made it?" The girl asks as we start to walk again.
"I don't know. But I'm gonna find out. And neither one of us should be alive right now. She got out, so you're gonna help me find her." I declare. "Things aren't over. They're not over."
"I want to believe that." The girl sighs.
"You have to." I reply.
We continue to walk down the road, and soon learn more about each other. Her name is Tara, and she used to be with the governor. I tell her about Rick and Kadyn, and the prison.
Soon we come across a couple of walkers. I take out my knife and advance towards them. Tara follows behind, a little unsure.
When I approach the first walker, my head starts to feel light, and I almost lose my balance as I stab it through the skull. I try to shake away the feeling, but the second walker stumbles towards me and I fall.
"Glenn!" Tara gasps, running forward. She pulls the walker off of me and kills it. I struggle for breath as I cough, feeling the same sickness take over my body again. I feel too weak to even push myself back up.
By the time I catch my breath, I notice a large vehicle had pulled up. Tara stands up angrily.
"Hope you enjoyed the show, assholes!" She shouts, holding up her middle finger at the group. I try to warn her for our safety, but I'm coughing to hard to speak.
"You got a damn mouth on you, you know that?" A large, red haired man opens the door of the vehicle and stands up. "What else you got?"
