Chapter 8
BloodlettingKadyn's POV
Flashback
"Bella! Get inside!" I call to my younger stepsister. She's standing about twenty feet away from the front porch, looking up at the sky.Helicopters.
Big, black, shiny helicopters. At least ten of them were flying in the direction of the city. Thick, dark smoke rose above the pine tree tops in the distance. The city was about an hour drive away - why was there so much smoke?
It must be a big fire. I thought. But, in the back of my mind, I knew it wasn't just a fire. I could feel it; something different, but I just couldn't find anything else for the problem to be.
Something didn't feel right. Even the atmosphere felt a bit spooky. All the smoke and dust in the air had turned the sun red, which made the scene even more intense.
"Bella!" I call again, this time more firm.
She spins around and runs to the porch. She stands next to me, and we look up at the sky in wonder.
"What's going on?" She cries, stepping closer to my side.
"I don-"
"Kadyn! Bella! Get in here! Now!" I hear my older stepbrother, Joey, yell before I could finish my sentence.
We rush inside, only to find Joey sitting on the couch in the living room, his eyes transfixed on the glowing TV screen.
"What's happening?" I ask nervously as we sit down beside him.
"I'm not sure. Something in the city." He answers, turning up the volume.
The TV is channeled on the news. The camera shows the city; in massive destruction. The crisis is being filmed from above, most likely from a helicopter. The reporter is talking nervously.
A mass of people are running through the streets. There is fire, smoke, screaming, and these strange people.
The camera then zooms in on one of the people. I gasp in complete shock at their appearance.
There was no way this . . . thing was alive. It was undeniably a female; but it was her appearance that had shocked me. Her clothes were ripped and dirty, blood stains all over her and on the tattered fabric.
Her skin was a sickly grayish color, peeling off in random places, and it looked as if some wild animal had just taken huge chomps out of her. Her eyes were clouded over with a greenish yellow color. Her face was so bony and chewed up, and there was dark red blood around her mouth. The big gashes on her face stood out in a loud and quite scary fashion. Her hair was blonde and dirty, and looked like it had been up in a pony tail. She definitely wasn't in a good situation.
The girl walked around for a moment, limping and staggering like a drunk. I gasp. The girl had thrown herself at someone, on of the living, ripping off the flesh of their arm with her teeth. More of the chewed up people appeared and started doing the same to the human. I'm too much in shock to speak.
I cover my hand with my mouth. This could not be real. But it was.
"We need to leave." Joey says suddenly. My eyes widen and I look at him.
"Where would we go?" I ask.
Joey shrugs his shoulders nervously.
"The nearest town is only a mile and a half away.. those things could easily get to us." Bella says fearfully.
I turn back to the TV, only to see the girl falling to the ground, dead. She had been shot in the head with a bullet.
I nod my agreement and comfirmation. "We're leaving."
