Chapter 4: Vatos

Daryl, Rick, Glenn, and T-Dog still haven't returned. I didn't expect it would take this long. They'll be fine, I tell myself. I walk down to the shore of the rock quarry. Andrea and Amy are out in the middle of the water on a boat, fishing.

Well, I can fish too. So, I pull a boat out into the water with my homemade fishing pole. I also have a tackle box which I had borrowed from Dale earlier. I paddle the boat out onto the opposite side of

Andrea and Amy, waving at them as I pass.

The fish in the water are plentiful, and soon I have nearly half of the boat filled with shiny fish. I glance up at Dale on the RV. He's looking at something on the hill. I look up there, and see Jim, although I can't tell what he's doing.

I don't pay attention to him, and continue with my fishing. I decide to paddle back after a few more fish have been caught. I stop at the shore and tie all the fish on a string. Andrea and Amy pull up in their boat beside me.

"Looks like we're having fish tonight!" I say happily, placing my string of fish over my shoulder. Amy and Andrea carry their fish together on a string, and the three of us walk back up the hill to the camp.

"Oh, baby. Will you look at that? Hey, check it out." Morales calls when he sees us walking up the hill.

Lori applauds, and Carol smiles at us.

Amy and Andrea hand their rope of fish to Morales, but I hold on to mine.

"Ladies, because of you my children will eat tonight. Thank you." Morales smiles at us.

"Thank Dale. It's his canoe and gear."

Jaqui high fives me, smiling.

"Mom, look. Look at all the fish." Carl says, coming up to me and looking at my rope of fish. I show the rope of fish to Lori, playfully swinging it close to her.

Lori leans away, laughing. "Thank you." She laughs.

"Whoa." Carl says, touching one of my fish.

"Yeah, whoa. Where did you learn to do that?"

"Our dad." Amy says. "I taught myself," I smile.

"Can you teach me how to do that?" Carl asks, looking up at me.

"Sure. I'll teach you all about nail knots and stuff." I say, and then I look at Lori. "If that's okay with you?"

"You won't catch me arguing." Lori smiles.

Then, Dale walks back up to the camp from the hill where Jim was.

"Hey, Dale, when's the last time you oiled those line reels? They are a disgrace." Andrea jokes.

"I, uh-I don't want to alarm anyone, But we may have a bit of a problem." Dale says, pointing up the hill to where Jim is digging.

I follow Andrea, Amy, Bella, Joey, Shane, Carol, Dale, and several other from the camp up the hill.

Even with a crowd of people around him, Jim doesn't stop digging.

"Hey, Jim. Jim, why don't you hold up, all right? Just give me a second here, please?" Shane says, stepping forward.

"What do you want?" Jim asks, leaning on the shovel.

"We're all just a little concerned, that's all." Shane tells him.

"Dale says you've been out here for hours." Morales adds.

"So?" Jim defends himself.

"So why are you digging? Are you heading to China, Jim?" Shane asks.
