Chapter 58: Survivor
A/N: heads up, this is the last chapter, cherish it my friends.
Kadyn's POV
The lies echo in my mind like a throbbing headache. All the hope I had was false, all the joy I had at the thought of finding a cure is gone, down to the last shred.
Abraham turned the fire truck around and we started back towards the people we called home. No one says a word. The only sound was the roar of the engine.
How far would we have gone if Eugene didn't tell the truth? What on earth would we have done if we made it all the way to Washington and he didn't have a clue what he was doing? We would have died, most likely, and, trying to stay positive, I think about that as we head back.
The memory of the people who died along the way resonates heavily in my heart as I gaze out the window. There were too many. Bella and Joey didn't deserve their fate. They were innocent, but this world was not. This world is cold and ravaging, a raging monster that has taken too many. We have to reclaim it. We have to keep fighting it.
The road back seemed endless. We stop only occasionally to collect water and scavenge for supplies. It takes a day and a half before I start recognizing the surroundings.
As we approach the church building, we can instantly tell something is wrong. The glint of Michonne's sword flashes in the sunlight. The group is standing in front of the church, seemingly defending themselves from it.
Abraham stomps on the gas pedal, and the fire truck hurdles toward the church as a walker escapes through the barricaded front door.
We brace for impact, successfully blocking the front of the church with the truck. The walkers that are inside are unable to escape.
With Glenn's arm slung around my shoulders, I exit the fire truck through the driver's door.
As I approach the group of familiar faces who were gathered outside, I let a smile stretch my chapped lips. These were the people I called home. This church building, the prison, all the other places the group and I have had as a sanctuary, they will never be home like these people.
Confusion is etched onto every one of the faces that greet us.
"Why-?" Carl opens his mouth. He's right, they all are. We shouldn't be back. We should be in Washington finding the cure.
"It was a lie." I say. "The whole thing. There, um, there isn't a cure."
Michonne walks up to me and hugs my neck. "Baylee's alive. A group went to get her back."
As soon as the words leave her lips, I'm smiling. Smiling for what feels like the first time in a long time. She's alive, they're going to get her.
I reach for Glenn and he hugs me tightly to his body, swaying from foot to foot, and I laugh. The happy feelings seem to swell inside of me like a balloon.
I soon pull away from Glenn's embrace, observing the remaining members of the group. Michonne, Carl, and Gabriel are among the familiar faces. Abraham, Rosita, Tara, and Eugene are clambering out of the wrecked fire truck.
"You showed up just in time." Carol says. "We're about to join the rest in the search. You in?"
"When do we start?" I ask, grinning.
