Chapter 21

Demi's POV

    At the hospital....

    I listen to the constant beeping of machines, steady hum of the elevators across the hall, and to chatter of nurses at their stations. Most people would say the noise bothers them, but it comforts me in a strange way. It reminds that there is still life around me and that Simon is still alive. Right now he's passed out. He had a dizzy spell in the ambulance on the way here. He's been out a good two hours. The doctor says he should come out of it in a few hours. The dizzy spell was mainly due to exhaustion.

   It's good to Simon sleeping though. He's been running himself ragged just as much as I have, if not more. He works so hard and never has the time to rest. It's unfortunate that the only place Simon has gotten rest in weeks is in the hospital proceeding a heart attack. What can you do. Life throws the unimaginable your way and you just have to face it head on. 

    I spend the rest of the evening by his bedside. I prop his pillows every hour or so and watch his chest rise and fall. Panic swells me when he makes slight gasping sounds but he quickly gets it back. 

1 hour later...

   I adjust Simon's pillows for the sixth time when I feel movement above it. Simon's eyes begin to flutter open. Relieve swells within me. I hug Simon gently. "Simey, you're alive!" He stifles a laugh but ends up having a coughing fit. "Simon, please don't laugh or speak right now. You need to save your voice so you can gain back some of your strength." Simon squeezes my hands and motions for the pad and paper on the table. I grab it and hand it over to him. He begins scribbling down a message. A couple minutes later, he hands it back to me. It reads: 

   Demi, my love, you're absolutely incredible. So few people would do what you've been doing today for me. Thank you for being there for me in this tough time. I love you so much and there is no other woman I would want by my side. 

  Tears swell in my eyes. "I love you too so much Simon and I promise you that you will overcome this. Don't even think about any problems right now. I will take care everything for you. The important thing right now is your health. He smiles and nods what I'm saying. I have no doubt in my mind that Simon won't get through this. He's a strong man and I know he knows that.
