-Amari's POV-
I felt the rocket jolt beneath my feet, and I knew we had arrived on Mars. As I stepped out, it all felt so wrong. This was supposed to be Earth's brother planet? Already, I could spot more differences than similarities between Earth and Mars.My parents, and my sister, Carmen, also stepped out of the rocket at this point. I looked up at the sky, trying to determine the time. That was when I remembered that it always looked like it was night around here. Normally, I would've checked my watch after this. But, according to a research project I had done on Mars for school last year, time was also different around here. I couldn't just rely on my watch or the sky anymore.
I watched as all the more experienced astronauts around us set up camp, while the inexperienced astronauts like us stood by and let them work. Boy, were we lucky that humans had gone into space before. That way, there were at least some people who knew what they were doing.
One of the astronauts told us that it could take a while to set everything up, and that we should get a feel for the place instead of just standing around, but he also warned us not to stray too far from camp. I was all for the idea of exploring, and was more than willing to wander while these guys did whatever the heck they were doing.
"Hey Carmen, wanna explore a bit?" I asked. I couldn't help but notice how weird and muffled my voice sounded due to my helmet. Carmen raised an eyebrow at me, so I spoke louder. "Do you wanna explore with me?!" She nodded in response, and followed me as I set off towards the red planet's horizon.
