After what happened on the field I was terrified to see him again. I hid in the back with Chyna, my best friend with the ironic name.
Her parents had visited the land of rice when she was one and they still hadn't chosen a name for their daughter. When she was three they asked her what she wanted her name to be and she chose China. They told her that she couldn't be China because it was already a name, so she thought for a second and picked Chyna instead. "Well well well. Look who finally decided to show up."
"I got hung up at the field."
"Hung up or picked up?"
"What in the Hell does that mean?"
"Well, a little jabber jay may have told a certain someone that another certain someone was not nice to the first someone and another someone likes the first someone and would never do what the second someone did to the first."
"You told Alex I liked him didn't you?"
"How did you follow that?"
"For starters, he broke up with his girlfriend today. Then, he sat down and spoke to me, and to top it all off my sweet friend; after watching him on the field he kissed me. No popular boy kisses me. NONE!"
"Crap."
"Why did you do it?"
"Because you would be cute together, and I know you don't believe it, but he's a nice guy."
"What do you mean I don't believe that he's a nice guy?"
"If you did you would have made a move already."
"Not necessarily, just because he's nice doesn't mean that I would ask him out."
"Why not?"
"Um, he's cute, smart, and let's not forget- oh what was he again? POPULAR!"
I feel strong hands on the clasp my shoulders and hear a low voice ask, "Who's popular?"
My face goes white and I glare at my supposed best friend. She has a grin on her face that would put the Cheshire cat to shame. Quietly she mouths go for it and leaves. My private prince sits next to me with a thud and takes the apple off my tray. "I was going to eat that."
"No, you weren't."
"How do you know my dietary needs?"
"You weren't going to eat it because it has a bruise." I paused, only certain people knew that I wouldn't eat anything if it had a defect. With grapes they had to be hard and not mushy, apples had to have no bruises, and orange juice couldn't have pulp. "I do have to applaud that your taste in friends isn't the same as your taste in food."
"Are you saying there is something wrong with Chyna?" I started to get really defensive against him. I may have a ginormous crush on him but that was too far. "No, I mean that you are one of the few kids that talks to the special education classes."
He took another bite of MY apple that I wasn't going to eat anyways. I peered into his eyes with an intense interest. He surrounded himself with them too. No one he ever dated did, though. "Why do you do it if you care about your image so much."
Darling," my heart skipped a beat, "it is because I care about my image that I hang with them."
"I don't follow."
"You see, they are no different, but they will make the most impact on the world. I'm not saying that I don't just do it for the fame, I truly do enjoy their company."
"I will never understand Alexander the Great will I?"
"I'll take being called a Greek king." He smirked at me with a twinkle in his eyes. "Anyways, we never finished our conversation."
"Oh, I believe we did." I grab my backpack and move to get up. Yet again I am trapped by him grabbing my hand, which sends electric shots through my body. "Please, just hear me out?"
He looked so adorable and vulnerable that I couldn't help but say no. I sat back down again. "You have ten minutes."
"All I need is nine."
"So you get nine. Go."
"Okay, I am sorry about kissing you without your consent it will never happen again-"
"Again?"
"Sweetheart if you don't let me finish then I get extra time."
"Fine."
"Anyways, as I am sure you've heard by now, Chyna told me you liked me. At first, I thought that it was nothing because every other girl in this hell-hole likes me too. But then I started looking in your direction in class, and I was noticing small things that I never had before. Like how your hair curls in the rain when you spend your off outside literally dancing in the rain. Or how you scrunch up your nose when you don't understand a question. How you throw your head back when Cameron says something hilarious."
My voice caught in my throat as I tried to come up with a smart comment. I had noticed the small things about him, but I didn't notice that he was doing the same thing. I thought he was just looking out the window and thinking of the next game or wondering why I was soaking wet. As I was about to open my mouth to say something to this day that I can't remember, the bell rang. "I have to go," I whispered in a hushed tone instead.
"Okay, how about we talk later?"
"When?"
"Tonight over dinner. I'll pay." I raced home instead of spending every last waking moment at school until I had to go to the true hell hole. After all, I finally had a date. I pause, she'll never let me go. The witch would rather lock me in the basement then let me go out again.
She says that it's because she cares about me, but I know that she doesn't. I consider going to Alex and telling him that I have to take a rain check... But if I don't go out with him tonight then I may never get to.
I sit on a bench and debate what to do with my situation. I consider pleading, sneaking out, and go back to asking for a different day. After about an hour of sitting in the hall like a crazy person, I decide that I'll just say that I am going out with Chyna. My mom doesn't know what car she drives nor where we would go. In all honesty, she is still amazed that I even have a friend, and it's been three years.
