With it being so early in the morning, you would think that there was a place to park, but no. Instead, Alex circled the parking lot once, slowly. Agonizingly slow. The second he pulled up to the valet, I opened the door and sprinted into the hospital. There was no one at the receptionist desk, so I looked around at the first floor, not exactly sure what I was hoping to see.
Over by the piano, I spotted Amber sitting hunched over. I raced over to her and kneeled by the chair she was in. It took her a moment before recognizing it was me through her tears, but she gave me a hug the second she knew. I began tearing up and heavy sobs rocked my body.
Alex found us and stood back a few steps, looking very uncomfortable. "What happened?"
"I don't know, they went camping up in the mountains for the weekend, and I knew they were coming down tonight to get a few hours of sleep before school tomorrow. Then, I got a call from the police saying she'd been in an accident."
"Where are Cameron's parents?"
"I don't know, I thought he said something about them being in Europe for their 20th anniversary, but I don't know for sure."
"Let me call them, I'll be back." Alex walked back outside, and I stood there stunned. I was sitting here crying, doing nothing for the greater good, and he took the bull by the horns and is taking steps.
I looked at Amber and wiped the tears off of my face. Sniffing a few times, she put part of my hair behind my ears and gave a weak smile. I could tell it was killing her. Alex walked back inside and ran his hands through his hair as he walked over to us. "I called twice and no answer."
"Okay, anyone else we can contact?"
"I can call his older sister, but I don't know if she'll pick up if she sees my number."
"Why not?" He glanced at me and ran his fingers through his hair again.
"Alex, why can't you call her?"
"We um, have a past, and it uh- didn't end well."
"Jesus Christ, I don't care if you dated her. She needs to know!"
"Can we call her from your phone then?" I nodded and got my phone. I had no reception so I started walking towards the door with Alex walking beside me. After I got three bars, I dialed the number from his phone into mine and held it up to my ear.
While it was ringing, I laid my head on his chest and listened to the brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrring of the phone. I counted them in my head and felt his hands rub my back. On the fifth, I heard the click of someone answering it.
"Hullo?" I snapped my head up and scrambled for a response.
"Um, yes, hi. Is this Mia?"
"Yeah, it is, who is this?"
"I'm Cydney, I'm friends with your brother Cameron and he just got in a car accident, your parents aren't picking up and I thought he would want someone here that is part of his family."
"I have a class in an hour, it's five in the morning."
"You really don't care that your brother could die?"
"Have you seen him?"
"No."
"I'll see if I can call out of class, which hospital?"
"Lutheran."
"Okay, I'll see what I can do. Thanks, Cydney."
She hung up and I put my phone back in my pocket. Alex pulled me into his chest again and I pushed my fists into my sides. This couldn't be happening. He sighed and tucked me under his arm so we could go back inside and wait for Mia to get here. The sun was just starting to peek over the horizon and cast the magnificent purples and pinks across the early clouds. Those were Chyna's favorite colors...
