Date Night

I made it home closer to one thirty and spent the five hours getting ready for my date. I haven't been on one in a year, and my dad will be weirdly optimistic. I tried on every dress that I owned and didn't give up until I found something acceptable for my date. Then, it occurred to me that I had absolutely no idea where he was taking me. I changed my dress from over the top to mediocre. It would work if we were going to a fast food place or somewhere semi nice like Olive Garden.

My mom came home before he got here to pick me up and my heart fell. I knew that the night would be involved with heavy interrogation for both me and Alex before she deemed it acceptable for me to go out with him. Even if it was for just a night. With no other prospect of another date. Because he would find me under his league and leave me. Probably in the middle of the date. But hey, at least he probably wouldn't die. Who am I kidding? It will end just like the last one. I broke down sobbing and my mom came in. She sat down beside me and just held me for a few minutes. Once I stopped leaking tears the conversation started. "Why are you all dolled up?"

"I don't know."

"Yes, you do."

"I thought that I was going on a date tonight."

"And you aren't why?"

"Because it will happen again."

"Look, honey, you may think of me as the devil incarnate, but if you really want to go out with this guy I am not going to stop you. I just want you to be even more careful than before. Okay?" My whole spirit perked up at those words. Then the nagging feeling that he won't like me came back. "I still don't know why I am bothering."

"What do you mean?"

"He won't like me."

"He asked you out didn't he?"

"Yeah, but I have been in most of my classes with him for three years and he still didn't know my name. And he only asked me out because he broke up with his girlfriend and Chyna told him that I liked him the same time she told him that his girlfriend was cheating on him with his best friend. I am nothing but a rebound girl."

"Cydney A. Thompson! Don't think like that! Just because he asks you out after he breaks up with his girlfriend doesn't mean you are nothing but a rebound girl!" I looked at her with the question in my eyes. Even after sixteen years she had never said my middle name. But either way, I got up and did my makeup. I was ready ten minutes before he got there.

After he knocked on the door I got up from the couch to answer it. I waited until he was done knocking and a few seconds so I wouldn't see overly desperate. "Woah."

"What?"

"I never expect girls to be ready this early. My mom told me that I get there early so they aren't late."

"Well, I didn't have any afternoon classes so I came home and did my homework."

"How do you not have any afternoon classes?"

"I finished the credits that I needed."

"Lucky! Anyways, how much time did you spend getting ready?"

"Why does that matter?"

"Because you seem impeccable yet simple, which is not an easy look. That and it's not every day you go out with the captain of the football team."

"Cocky aren't we?"

"Confident. There is a difference."

"Well, I don't want to seem too forward but my mom requires that she meets all of my dates before we leave. And how did you know my address?"
