It was Friday, still early May. Alex was driving me home like always. We pulled up to my house and I kissed him. We never studied together, we would get too distracted, and in order to let him play his favorite sport, we had to keep our grades up. I shut the door and heard the sound echo. I turned to see him getting out as well. "Are you coming in?"
"Just for a few seconds, I have to ask your parents something." I rose my eyebrows but walked to the door. My mom and dad were both home. "Mr. and Mrs. Thompson. May I please speak to you? In private preferably?"
They both nodded and shoved me out of the den. I leaned against the wall and waited for them to finish. Not even a full minute of them talking and my dad stormed out of the room with his head down and his fists clenched. He didn't even notice me. "And what will you do if she..."
"I won't push her past her comfort zone, but I feel that this is something we both want."
"Does she know?" I couldn't hear Alex's response because the door shut again. I walked into the kitchen where my dad was fuming over a cup of water. I slowly approached and touched his wrist. He jerked at the motion and glanced at me. "Dad, what is wrong?"
"Nothing honey, I'm fine now." He bent down and kissed my head. Alex and my mom entered the room and Alex looked at my dad. My father crossed the distance between them and nodded while shaking my boyfriend's hand. The exchange was awkward. They released their grasp and Alex started to walk away. What the hell? I followed him to the door and grabbed his shoulder as he was under the door frame. "What? No goodbye?"
"I have a lot to do for tomorrow."
"What is happening tomorrow?"
"It's a surprise."
"Hmm, can I have a hint?"
"Wear something with purple in it." He bent down and pecked me on the lips. I could tell he wanted to deepen the kiss, but he was in a fragile state with my dad and it would be a bad idea to make it worse.
I leaned against the open door as he went to his car. He got in and sped away. I blew the fading figure a kiss and went inside to get to the bottom of this. "What did he ask you?"
"You'll see."
"You aren't going to tell me?"
"It's not my job." I groaned and stomped my way to my room. Alex wouldn't respond to any of my texts, nor would he answer my calls. What the hell was going on and why couldn't I know?

I woke up early with only one response from what seemed like hundreds of texts. 'Be ready at 12!!' I remembered that he wanted me to wear something purple so I dug through my closet until I found a light lavender dress that stopped just above my knees and hugged my chest just right. I spent a while on my makeup. I must have washed it off and re-applied it ten times. By the time I was ready, it was 11:30 and he knocked on the door. My mom got it and I met them in the living room. "I will never be used to you being ready early. But it is a good thing I showed up early because you are wearing the wrong outfit."
"You said purple." He just shook his head and made it to my closet. He started rummaging and pulled out a dark purple v-neck. He tossed that to the bed and grabbed a pair of shorts from my drawer. They weren't just any shorts, they were the shortest ones that I owned. "There we go."
"Why those shorts?"
"Shorts are shorts."
"Okay." He started to exit the room. "You don't have to leave."
