54.Sick, Gone, Jail, and What?

“James, I think you're sick,” he told as he stared into my eyes.

“No, I can't be,” I cried as I pushed myself to my paws and started towards the barn, but I fainted.

I woke up hours later in the barn with Anna by my side. “Hello dear,” I said hoarsely.

“Rest dear,” she cried as she pulled the blanket farther up.

“What is wrong?” I asked as I stood and slowly walked out of the stall.

“No dear, you're sick. Please come and rest,” she pleaded as she followed me; so I went back and laid down.

“Where are Milly and Tigger?” I inquired as I yawned. I could smell a weak, old scent of them.

“Gone! So is John!” she cried as she locked me in my stall.

“Where? Why?” I roared as I stood and tried to knock open my stall, but she held it shut.

“We had to sell the lions and John is in jail,” she cried as she looked away from me. “We have no more money. The meat went bed; so you got sick. John went looking for the translator and was convicted for stealing.”

“No! I never wanted this! Where were they sold?” I hissed as I stood on my hind legs and placed my front paws on the gate.

“A zoo,” she replied before she hurried to the door.

“What will happen to you? Do you have money to feed yourselves?” I roared before she left.

“We have money for us, but you...” she started; then she fled without finishing.

Since she wasn't holding it shut anymore, I could weakly open my stall; then I climbed the ladder to Dr. Jason's office, but there was no doctor stuff. All that was up there was hay and a couple of boxes full of books. I laid down and fell asleep.

“James, wake up!” Dr. Jason yelled as he nudged me.

“What?” I asked as I batted him with my paw. He fell down ans I hurried over to him. “I'm so sorry! Are you okay?” I asked as I licked his leg.

“I think so,” he answered before he limped across the room.

“What will happen to me?” I questioned as I helped him move boxes to the rising platform.

“She didn't tell you?” I shook my head. “I'm not surprised. It is hard on all of us, but especially her and Annie,” he replied before he turned his face away from me and whispered, “You have been sold.”

“Sold? To who? Where?” I cried as he let me down by the rising platform.

He climbed down and ladder and I helped him take the boxes to the house. “James, you were sold to a circus,” he answered as he carried the boxes into the house.
