Chapter 18
"Hello Castiel." Gabriel sauntered over to Castiel while he was deep in thought. They both sat on bench in the center of a huge park. "Whatcha thinking about?"
"Why am I here?" Castiel said bitterly.
"Look around you." They observed the people around them. There were a group of kids playing tag, a family having a picnic, a jogger walking their dog; nothing unusual. "Look at all these innocent children. Look at the squirrels scurrying about. Look at the families enjoying this warm day with a cool breeze blowing around them." Gabriel snapped. In a split second, everything changed. The once glorious trees were withered and bare of leaves. There wasn't a person in sight, not even a chipmunk or dog running about. The bright blue sky was replaced with a misty gray sky. The only light was from a glowing fire in the distance. It was terrible.
"This is the future of Earth if Crowley and the Daleks do what they plan to. Every living creature will be destroyed. You must understand the seriousness of this situation. You cannot tell Crowley the location of the Ten Commandments."
"I understand."
"Do you Cas? You nearly told them when they threatened to kill Sam. What if it was Dean? I know you have a soft spot for him."
"I said I understand." Castiel's voice was unnervingly calm.
"Good. Because Dean will die along with everyone else if Crowley gets what he wants. There's no bringing him back this time." Castiel's eyes grew big.
"I have to go." He said quickly.
"Excuse me?" Gabriel said in disbelief. "What could be more important than the end of the world?"
"Dean. You called. What's wrong?" Castiel appeared in the dingy hotel room.
"Clara, explain." Dean said without taking his eyes off Castiel.
"The Doctor." She took a deep breath. "He's regenerating."
"What?" Castiel yelled causing anyone who was still sleeping to jolt awake. Cas rushed over to the Doctor. His body was glowing and covered in scars and bruises.
"What does that mean? Regenerating?" Jocelyn asked from the other side of the room.
"When a Time Lord is about to die, they have a little trick called regeneration." Jack explained. "It will sort of remake the Doctor. He'll look and act different, but he'll also be healed."
"That doesn't sound so bad. Why don't we just let him regenerate?"
"It's also extremely painful. Plus it will change his personality completely. The Doctor we know and love will change. Not to mention, he could have two heads or no eyes or even be a girl!"
"I can fix him." Castiel said suddenly. Clara perked up.
"Really?" She said hopefully. Castiel placed his hand on the Doctor's forehead, and the golden glow grew even brighter until everyone had to look away. There was a shimmering sound and then it turned dark. The light was gone. The Doctor slowly perched himself up on his elbows. All his injuries had disappeared miraculously.
"Doctor?" Clara whispered. Everyone held their breath.
"Hello Clara." The Doctor said happily. "What did I miss?" He looked around the room at all people staring at him.
"Castiel, how did you-" Dean started. Clara jumped on Cas and gave him a huge embrace.
"Thank you thank you thank you!" She squealed. Dean stared at her jealously.
"I have to go." Castiel mumbled. He stumbled into the hallway silently. Dean ran after him.
"Cas, wait." Castiel turned to look at Dean. His face was drained of all color, and Dean could have sworn Castiel's eyes flickered gold. "How did you do it?" Castiel looked into Dean's eyes. He walked up to him, and they were mere inches apart. "Um Cas?" Dean said uncomfortably.
"Dean," Castiel's eyebrows were raised with worry. "64 Hunt Lane. And bring John." Cas fluttered away leaving Dean alone in the dark hallway. A wave of disappointment rose over Dean as Castiel left, and he wasn't sure why. Probably because he didn't tell me how he healed the Doctor, Dean thought to himself.
As Dean entered the room, he saw that everyone had gathered around the sofa to listen to the Doctor's story.
"Crowley and the Daleks have been working extremely hard to build this machine of theirs. I watched them retrieve the pieces, and it was terrible." Fear rushed into his eyes as he spoke. "I could feel the emptiness crawl into me. The darkness that is bound to happen if we fail to stop them. The Daleks managed to get the pieces for the machine, but they don't know how to assemble it. Only certain angels know." He looked at Dean. "Your friend Castiel knows that the instructions are located in the Ten Commandments."
"How do you know all this?" Dean questioned.
"Well, when Castiel absorbed the regeneration energy, I sort of, got a peak inside his mind." He shifted uncomfortably on the sofa. "Dean, I..." The Doctor turned away from him, suddenly seeming sorrowful. Dean cleared his throat.
"John, can I see you?" He said breaking the awkward silence. Jocelyn looked at the two as they exited the room as if she was debating on following them or not. She decided against it and continued picking at a scab on her finger.
"Dean, what's up?" The two men never had a real conversation together so it seemed odd to speak with one another.
"Do you know where Hunt Lane is?"
"Yeah it's a few blocks over from Baker Street. Why?"
"We need to go there." Dean grabbed John by the wrist and started dragging him through the hallway.
"Wait, what? Why are we going there?" John objected. Dean sighed, hating that he had to explain himself.
"Because Cas might be in trouble." His voice cracked as he spoke. John instantly understood. The men scurried down the hall and into the brisk London air.
"62, 63, ah, here we go. 64 Hunt Lane." John gestured to a dingy old house at the end of the road. It's paint was peeling and the wood looked old and rotten.
"You sure this is it?" Dean said in disgust.
"Positive." John gulped. They walked through the front yard which was filled with pieces of shattered glass and wood. John began rapping his hand on the door when Dean grappled his wrist.
"What are you doing?" He whispered.
"I'm knocking."
"Does it look like a house you would knock on?" John peered up at the shadowy windows and shrugged.
"Guess not."
Dean turned the doorknob and the two men ventured inside. The scent of rotten meat penetrated the air and there were cobwebs in every corner.
"I don't like this one bit." John complained.
"Shh! I hear something."
The further they walked down the hallway, the louder the voices became.
"Yes, I understand the seriousness of-"
"I know! You understand the seriousness of what you did and the price you'll have to pay for it. You've said that ten times already!"
"They're here."
The door that John and Dean were listening behind slammed open. Castiel and Gabriel were standing across from each other grimly. Cas looked much worse than the last time Dean saw him. It looked as if his face was melting off and his eyes were glimmering gold.
"Dean. I'm glad you came." Castiel's raspy voice echoed throughout the room.
"If it's alright with you, I am not destined to hear the prophecy. I'll be leaving." With a sharp look at Castiel, Gabriel disappeared from the dark room.
"Whats up with this filthy house?" Dean asked. A woman lurking in the corner stepped out of the shadow she was hiding in.
"What are you calling filthy, young man?" The old lady had short gray hair that curled around on top of her head. Her glasses made her eyes seem huge on her small face. She smelled of perfume, and, blood?
"Sorry. My name is-"
"Dean Winchester. And this must be John Watson. It's a real pleasure." She smiled her crooked teeth at a terrified John. "My name is Verdad Cajero, but you may call me Destino." The woman rolled her r's as she spoke with a heavy Spanish accent.
"So why are we here?" Dean tried to draw the attention away from John who has turned a ghostly pale.
"Oh how the petals of life fall so gracefully to the ground."
"What does that supposed to mean?"
"Your friend Castiel is dying."
Dean suddenly grew as pale as John. How could Cas be dying? Then he remembered. The Doctor's regeneration energy. It's inside Castiel.
"How do we help him?" Dean said, trying to hold back the tears.
"You, can't do anything. Only a being more powerful than Castiel can destroy the energy forever." She stared up at the ceiling as if something was speaking to her. "However, each of you are destined to make a great sacrifice for the one you love." Dean and John looked nervously at each other. "Castiel has three days before the energy completely kills him. We will wait here for his savior."
"Wait, that's it?" Dean asked.
She smiled sympathetically and with a snap, Dean and John were back outside of the hotel room.
