Chapter 28
"Surprising isn't it?" Lucifer's attitude slipped out of Sherlock's mouth. "It took me a while, but there wasn't much to do in the pit." Sam shuttered at that word. Dean noticed and protectively stepped in front of his brother.
"What do you want Lucifer?" snarled Dean.
"Dean, Dean, this isn't about you. I'm here for Sam."
"Yeah I expected that. You're not going to touch him."
"Stop trying to be the hero, Dean. Plus, I don't need permission any more to enter a vessel. That's how I got into Sherlock."
"Wait, hold on," John said nervously. "I'm not an expert in the supernatural, but don't demons enter their vessel in black smoke?"
"Yes little soldier, now back off." Lucifer hardly regarded him.
"But when you came to our flat, it was black mist. And aren't you an angel?" Lucifer turned to John.
"Smart one, aren't you." John looked longingly at his friend. "While I was in hell, I learned a little trick that transforms an angel into a demon."
"Well that means you can use any vessel," Dean said with a hint of hope. "It doesn't have to be Sam."
"True, however, there's still only one true vessel I belong to. So if I leave Sherlock he'll die." Lucifer grinned. "I'll make a deal with you. Sherlock is destroyed inside. I was never meant to use him as a vessel, and is barely holding onto life. I will fix him, but afterwards I'm going to need a new vessel." He turned to Sam. "That's where you come in."
"Woah slow down there. There's no way Sam will be your vessel," Dean said angrily. "Why would we trust you anyway?"
"Because he helped the Doctor," said Clara. Everyone turned to her who looked as if she understood what was happening. "The devil is watching. That's what the Doctor said right before he left. He said someone helped him in a dream, and I believe that person is Lucifer."
"Absolutely right, little girl," said Lucifer smugly.
"That doesn't mean I'm going to yet you jump right into my brother!" yelled Dean.
"It's not your decision Dean." Dean looked like he was ready to kill Lucifer when Sam spoke up.
"He's right, Dean. It's my choice," said Sam while he pondered this idea.
"Sammy, you can't just give yourself to the devil."
"Well I can't just let Sherlock die. I wouldn't do that to him, or John. He's lost his friend once already."
"I've lost you countless times! And we always seem to find each other, but there's no going back from this one Sam."
"Let me talk to him," said Lucifer. "Alone." Dean was beginning to object when Sam agreed. They found a small room on the other side of the church where the could talk.
"So how've you been, Sammy?" Lucifer pulled up two dusty, wooden chairs. "Please, sit down." Sam reluctantly sat across from the devil.
"What do you really want Lucifer? I highly doubt you'd climb out of hell just to have a chat with me."
"Why the hostility Sam? Why do you hate me so much?" Sam knew Lucifer was messing with him, but anger came bubbling out.
"You know damn well why I hate you. You're a monster who forced me to leave my brother, which by the way he wasn't too keen on. You still haunt my nightmares, and you drove me insane. They still happen you know. The hallucinations. Every now and then I see something that's not actually there. And the worst part about you, the absolute worst that drives me over the edge, is how similar we are. You act so smug, but I know the real you. You miss your father, you want to believe he's still there for you. And you feel like there's no one there for you, not even your brother. I know you feel hollow and lonely inside, but you act courageous and cocky. I know this, because I feel that way too."
Lucifer looked shocked. His smirk disappeared and his face turned pale. Sam, with newfound confidence, leaned over and looked Lucifer straight into the eyes.
"You're a monster," Sam said sharply.
"We both are," he whispered back.
They sat in silence for a few moments. Sam breathed heavily while glaring at Lucifer.
"You want to make a deal," Sam said breaking the silence. "But why should I trust you?" Lucifer thought for a minute then sat up straight.
"After we fell in the pit, I had some time to think. I was inside of you, and I saw the things in your head. There was fear and anger, but mostly love. Love for your brother overwhelmed all other emotions. That's why you jumped in the pit in the first place. Now you said we were similar, but you have so much love for Dean. I never had that with my brother. There was hatred and pain between us. But when I was in you, I felt your happiness. That feeling of care was all I ever wanted, and I got that from you."
"Are you saying you want me to be your vessel so you can feel love?" Sam looked at Lucifer in utter disbelief.
"Please Sam. I never had the relationship you have with your brother. Let me feel that again, just for a little while." A wave of sadness rushed into Sam.
"You can fix Sherlock, make him all better again?"
"We'll not exactly,"
Sam sighed. "What do you mean?"
"I can heal him, but only an act of deep affection can cure him all the way."
"Wait a second," Sam let out a laugh. "So true love's kiss can fix Sherlock? Sounds like something out of a fairy tale."
"So will you do it? Let me have a day of happiness?" Lucifer looked innocently at Sam.
"I'm making a deal with the devil," Sam murmured under his breath. "Fine. I'll be your vessel."
