Chapter 29
Dean paced back and forth in the hallway waiting for Sam. He could hear distant yelling which made him even more anxious.
"How long are they going to take?" Dean said.
"Calm down Dean. I'm sure everything will be fine," said Castiel. Dean looked at his angelic friend.
"How you feeling Cas?" Castiel burrowed his eyebrows and looked at the ground. "You know, from the regeneration?"
"Oh yes. I'm fine." His voice sounded distant and even more monotone than normal.
"Hey?" Dean leaned over and squeezed Castiel's shoulder. Cas looked up at him. "Are you sure you're okay?" Castiel stared at him in silence.
"Dean, there's something you should know."
"What's wrong Cas?" Castiel turned and looked down the hall.
"They've stopped shouting."
"Seriously Cas, what is it?" Before the angel could answer, Sam and Sherlock walked out the door and over to the others.
"This may take a few hours," Lucifer said to Sam. Sam nodded and Lucifer headed back to the room he just exited. Dean pulled him over before he could leave.
"Alright Luci. Can I call you Luci?" Dean said to Lucifer. "I don't know what you said to my brother but I'm sure it's a load of crap." Dean pinned Lucifer to the wall. "If you try anything funny," Dean's voice lowered. "I will kill you." The devil smiled.
"Sure thing, Dean," hissed Lucifer. He smirked and sauntered into a nearby room. Dean grunted and went to join the others.
Sam had everyone gather in the middle of the church. There he told the group what happened with Lucifer.
"Dammit Sam," Dean yelled. "You're letting Lucifer go back inside you?"
"You don't understand, Dean. He's changed," Sam said calmly.
"No! You don't get it, do you? He's using you, and I'm not letting you go through with this."
"Well it's not your decision, is it Dean? Plus, it's the only way to save Sherlock." Dean stared at his brother in silence, then marched out of the room with Castiel trailing after him.
"Hey," John leaned over to Sam. "I appreciate what you're doing." Sam nodded without taking his eyes off the ground thinking about what he's done.
Dean marched down the hallways until he was far enough away from the others so they couldn't hear him. He and Castiel walked into a small room.
"Dean," Castiel said firmly. Dean ignored him and threw a vase across the room. It shattered and water spilled everywhere.
"How could he do that? Just run off and agree to let the devil use him as a vessel?" Dean knocked over a small desk in anger. "And Sam didn't even talk about it with me before he agreed to it!" Dean looked around for something else to break. Castiel pushed him against the wall.
"Dean Winchester, listen to me. You need to calm down. What's done is done." Dean breathed heavily and looked Castiel in the eyes. Then unexpectedly he threw himself at Castiel and wrapped his arms around him in tears.
"All I wanted," Dean whispered. "Was to protect Sam. What a lousy job I've done." Castiel looked completely shocked and awkwardly patted Dean on the back. "Dammit Cas, it's called a hug."
"Oh. I'm not overly familiar with this gesture." Dean smiled at how clueless Castiel is.
"When people are really happy or sad they hug people. I'm pretty sad right now so," Castiel rested his head on Dean's shoulder.
"I quite like these hugs," interrupted Castiel.
"What were you going to tell me earlier?" Dean said unwillingly pulling away from the hug.
"Oh yes. That..." Castiel trailed off. "There's something about the regeneration you should know." Castiel wandered around the room as he spoke. He looked out the window at the long field surrounding them. "Lovely view we have from up here."
"Cas, just spit it out already." Castiel sighed.
"After I regenerated, it transformed me." He gulped and looked sadly at Dean. "I'm no longer an angel."
"What?" Dean said in shock. "Then what are you?"
"I'm a Time Lord now." Dean stared at Castiel speechless. He burrowed his eyebrows looking for something to say. "If you don't mind, I'd like another one of those hugs now."
.
It had only been a few hours, but to Sam it felt like weeks. He knelt in a pew close to the alter and prayed. Worried thoughts rushed through his mind about Lucifer. Sam's prayers were interrupted when he felt a tap on his shoulder. Sherlock, looking rather tranquil, stood looking down on him.
"Sherlock's nearly cured. It's safe for me to leave him and enter you as a vessel. And since I'm not a true demon, we won't have to worry about that pesky anti possession tattoo of yours," Lucifer told him. Sam looked expectantly at the hallway waiting for Dean to come back. "We have to do it now before Sherlock becomes damaged again."
Sam stood up and without taking his eyes off the hall said, "Of course." He sighed and faced Lucifer. "I'm ready." A grin spread on Sherlock's face and his head snapped back with black smoke streaming out. Dean walked into the room and made eye contact with his brother right before the mist streamed into Sam.
"Sammy!" Dean yelled as he ran to his brother. Sam and Sherlock both fell to the ground. John, who had been watching the whole thing, ran to his friend.
"Sherlock? Wake up, Sherlock," John tried to coax Sherlock back to consciousness. Meanwhile, Sam's eyes burst open completely black. He turned and smiled at Dean who glared in return.
"Oh isn't this lovely?" Lucifer said as he stood up. "And it was so easy this time. Just made up a little lie about wanting to feel love or whatever and voila! The perfect vessel." Dean instinctively fingered his demon knife in his coat pocket. "Oh please. Take it out. I'd like to see you try and kill your own brother." Dean froze and looked up at his brother. Sam was tall before but now seemed to tower above him. Lucifer reached over to Dean and pulled the blade out of his coat. He shoved the handle into Dean's hand. "This is your chance Dean," spat Lucifer. He wrapped Dean's fingers around the handle of the knife. "You can kill the devil, but you have to kill Sam too."
"You know I'd never do that." Dean's voice softened and he looked down at the knife.
"Dean Winchester, one of the best hunters the world has ever seen, is hesitating to killing the devil. I thought you wanted to be the hero, Dean," said Lucifer mockingly.
"I'm sorry Sam." Dean looked into his brother's eyes. "I'm sorry I let this happen to you." Lucifer grabbed Dean's wrist and pulled it closer to himself so that the blade was touching Sam's chest.
Lucifer whispered in Dean's ear, "Can't do it Dean, can you? Can't bear to see little Sammy die." Dean shut his eyes and pushed the dagger into Sam's chest. A look of utter shock flashed across Lucifer's face. Sam's body fell, but Dean caught him before he hit the ground. Blood streamed down from the wound in Sam's chest. Dean pulled him in and tears came streaming down his face. He squeezed his limp brother tightly against him. Thoughts rushed through Dean's head as he desperately tried to find a way to bring Sam back. He looked at his brother with realization of what he had done.
"I'm sorry Sam. I'm so sorry."
