I walk through the glass doors to empty desks. Except the one in front of mine, Spencer's. He looks up and smiles.
"Since when do you show up early? I can't remember the last time you got here on time." I drop my things on my desk and sit.
"Actually... I want to talk to you. Do you want to get coffee with me later?" His smile widens, and my heart breaks knowing he takes it the wrong way.
"I'll never say no to coffee with you." His smile doesn't wipe off his face, even when he returns his attention back to his book, it doesn't disappear.
-Spencer walks back to the small table I'm sitting at, in the coffee shop across the street from our building. He holds his coffee which I know he loaded with sugar. When he sits down he nervously bites his lip, and I know with his brain his thoughts are racing at a million miles a second.
"Are you sure you don't want anything? Tea, or something?" I feel more than uncomfortable telling him this, there's no way I can casually sip my tea unknowing of what's about to happen.
"No, I'm okay. Thanks for coming with me, I know things have been kind of... different lately." His smile helps me relax, although I can see this whole, 'let's be friends' thing bothers him.
"As my husband I feel like we should be talking more." I joke, more than relieved he laughs.
"What did you want to talk about? I know there's more to this than coffee." My phone goes off in my bag.
"Oh sorry." I dig around for it, pulling it out and revealing Eli's calling. I ignore the call and put my phone back on the table.
"I do want to talk to you." Again, Eli calls and once again I hit ignore. This can't be it, this can't be how I tell him, how do I even tell him?
"I just want to see what's up with you? I'm sorry, you know, about what happened the last time we... talked. I shouldn't have left and either way I-" My phone rings again.
"Holy shit, are you kidding me? I'm sorry." I look up at Spencer before answering the call.
"What are you doing? What's so important that you have to call me three times in a row after I've ignored your calls?" I feel on edge. Not only do I have a million things going on, but I'm also about to tell my husband I'm pregnant, and there's a massive chance it's not his.
"I just wanted to see what you were doing. I hate when you go quiet." In my mind I keep repeating, 'don't blow up on him'. As great as he is, he's also very obsessive at times, he doesn't allow too much distance between us, hence him wanting me to move in with him.
"I can't talk right now, okay?" Without waiting for a response I hang up.
"I'm really sorry about that, um, what was I saying... I'm sorry for leaving that night the way I did."
"Who was on the phone?" He gestures with his head to the phone in my hand.
"Just now? I mean it wasn't important, obviously." He nods.
"Just now, who was it?" I frown not wanting to talk about Eli in anyway or even allude to the fact that he exists.
"Eli."
"He calls you a lot, doesn't he? I always see his name on your screen. Plus you make that face when he calls." I furrow my brows at his observation.
"What face?" I nearly pout, not wanting to dissect my current relationship.
"The kind of face that says you don't want to talk to him. He obsessively calls you. It's hard for him to be away from you, and I know that feeling, but this is different."
